ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Three low-income families have been given a handsome retainer to join Geraldine Borden for a day at her cliffside estate. All the parents must do to collect the rest of their money is allow their children to test out the revolutionary playground equipment Geraldine has been working on for decades. But there’s a reason the structures in the bowels of her gothic castle have taken so long to develop—they were never meant to see the light of day.

When a band of dysfunctional children is suddenly thrust into a diabolical realm of violence, they must grow up instantly to have a chance at survival. Will they find a way to put their differences aside, or be swallowed up by the insidious architecture all around them?

“With Playground, Aron Beauregard transcends himself, delivering a genuinely chilling, uncomfortable novel that will make even the most jaded horror fan squirm. A harrowing, relentless read that left me breathless.”

– Brian Keene

I was warned about page 40 before buying it and due to the nature of the book I figured it’d just be some gore or something but no, I was AMBUSHED on just page 38 and up until page 50. It’s not gore it’s so vile I actually don’t think I’ve blinked in the past 5 minutes. If you read this book please for the sake of your sanity avoid pages 38-50, you will live a better life if you do.

If you’re uncomfortable reading about children dying in any way, shape or form this is definitely not for you as it gets a bit brutal. There’s also talks of incestial thoughts, infertility issues, war crimes, adopted child/adult being mistreated and some very odd sexual scenes. If that hasn’t scared you off though the book is still fairly well written, the ending is as uplifting as it is devestating for the surviving characters.

I enjoyed the book but would have liked to learn more about the characters. All in all though, it’s a good read.

I recently delved into the world of splatter punk literature and stumbled upon Aron Beauregard’s Playground, a book that had been sitting on my want-to-read list for quite some time. Finally taking the leap to dive into this eloquently written masterpiece, I can confidently say that I am immensely glad I did. From the very first page, Aron Beauregard pulls his readers into a relentless emotional whirlwind, leaving us breathless and yearning for more. His vivid storytelling abilities are nothing short of remarkable, as he skillfully unravels a deeply terrifying narrative that had me gripping the edge of my seat sick bag in hand. Beauregard’s unique way with words captures the essence of the unfolding events in a manner that not only introduces the characters but also elicits genuine empathy from the reader. One particular individual, a man named Rock, left an indelible mark on my psyche. His role in the story proved to be both grotesque and spellbinding, making it impossible for me to tear my eyes away from the pages. While reading Aron Beauregard’s Playground, I found myself alternating between being repulsed by some of the more stomach-churning scenes and completely fixated on the narrative. The author’s ability to strike a seamless balance between the shocking and captivating is unparalleled. Even before reaching the final page, I had already purchased six more of Beauregard’s works, with The Slob next on my kindle. One must be cautioned, Aron Beauregard’s Playground is not for the faint-hearted or easily offended. It tackles dark and disturbing subject matter with unflinching honesty and unwavering intensity. This book is a testament to Beauregard’s talent, pulling no punches and immersing readers in a world that will forever challenge their notions of horror and suspense.
Beauregard’s mastery of the splatter punk genre is evident in every line, weaving a captivating tapestry of horror that will leave readers hungry for more. Well done, my friend!

There is a warning at the beginning for the violence, but there really should be a separate warning for the chapter “House of the Blind”. Pages 37-50 are a different kind of horror I never knew could scratch at the insides of my brain.

However, once you make it past that, the story actually becomes really intense in all the right ways, which I feel says more about me as this is a book about children ages 7-11 being horribly maimed and the descriptions of each maiming being very granular. Lol.

Meant only for the “real” gore lovers.

I’ve never read this style of book before – “splattergore” I think was the term.

Picture the Saw or Cube movies, but in book form.

Psycho woman can’t have kids, so she’ll punish and destroy those who can. I mean, why adopt when torture is an option?

It’s so hard to review because there was so much Nope in there, but at the same time I cared about the characters and what happened to them!

If you’re good with gore and kids dying horrifically, then go for it!

I started reading as a challenge, as I saw on tiktok many people can’t get past page 40. This book was amazing, the description was perfect and the gore and horror was just 10/10. Anyone sensitive to such things should be warned though, as it gets very graphic. Best book I’ve ever read!
