Ideas in Profile: Small Introductions to Big Topics

In the first title of an exciting new series one of the world’s leading political scientists asks the big questions about politics: what is it, why we do we need it and where, in these turbulent times, is it heading? From the gap between rich and poor to the impact of social media, via Machiavelli, Hobbes and Weber, Runciman’s comprehensive short introduction is invaluable to those studying politics or those who want to know how life in Denmark became more comfortable than in Syria.

The Ideas in Profile series is what introductions can and should be. Concise, clear, relevant, entertaining, original and global in scope, Politics makes essential reading for anyone, from students to the general reader.

Sharp and focused throughout Runciman provides the reader with a relatively simple explanation of how politics really works, and why we need to appreciate what it has done for us.

Although the book is a little dated, I still found it hugely informative. It is an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to explore the political world. It is written clearly and allows easy access to the complexities of politics. It’s only 163 pages, so it does not take long to read. It is exceptionally apposite to the notion, as David Runciman puts it himself, that politics matter!

Enjoyed by my 17 year old son looking for something to say on his personal statement!

    Decent little book.

Kindle version not great, can’t read the writing on illustrations.

About the content: As a beginner who knows very little about politics, I downloaded this as a starting point. It wasn’t necessarily a great introduction to political thinking as it doesn’t give an overview, rather focuses in on certain political theorists. But I learnt a lot and still a very interesting read.

I read this to aid me in writing my personal statement. It’s very informative and a great starter for anyone interested in politics. I particularly enjoyed all the political theory aspects.

A very interesting argument, thoroughly unexplained. Insightful use of contemporary modern historians, while being paraphrased to a level of easy understanding. The focus on violence and modernity was increasingly interesting, expanding valid points. Use of examples too were very relevant Andy relatable. Overall a convincing profile on how politics supposedly works.

If you want to know basics of politics as a subject then this isn’t the book. This is rather the author’s ideas what poltics is or ought to be Dont take this as a politics 101 text.
