A terrifying novel of a young man who is willing to defy everything. Even death…
Fabian Hightower has been killed in a car crash. At least, that is what a policeman is asking Alex, his mother to believe. But Alex knows she saw him that morning – at a time when he must have been dead.
When the funeral is over Alex tries hard to forget her bizarre experience. But her mind seems to be playing strange tricks on her, turning her grief into horror. When she turns to a medium her worst fears are realised. Fabian has unfinished business and he is determined to come back. But why?
Whatever the answer, something terrifies the medium so much she refuses to return. Alex longs to
turn to others for support. But there is a secret about Fabian that only she knows – a secret she must never share…

My first Peter James novel and I really enjoyed this supernatural story. I usually read at night, and have to admit that at times had difficulty in turning the light out! I’ve noticed a few negative review comments with regard to a lack of explanation of some characters’ storylines at the end. To be honest I think the author has included enough for the reader to be able to work these out. Authors shouldn’t have to spoonfeed and I think Peter has done a fab job, ending was brilliant – exactly how I would have written it myself so very happy author/reader here!!

This Paranormal book written by Crime Writer,Peter James is absolutely excellent!! I was unable to leave it alone & read it over two evenings…staying up until 1am each night as I just could not stop reading it.I am a real fan of Peter`s books anyway & lived in Brighton area for many years, where much of his books are set. This book involves the paranormal & crimes to a certain extent too…but it is mainly paranormal.I highly recommend this book & I could see it being made into a film or a drama maybe for TV. I slept with the light on after finnishing this book last night….!!

Not sure about this – have picked it up and started it, but put it down to read something else. Will come back to it if I run out of reading material.

I’m not really sure what to make of this book, which sees a stereotypical middle-classed son (called Fabian) haunt his mother, after his untimely demise.
As a ghost, he does what ghosts do, when haunting people. He doesn’t do it particularly well though, because I really didn’t care what happened to his mother.
As time progresses during the haunting, we start to wonder if it’s actually her son doing the scaring, or if it’s someone else doing the haunting, and start to wonder about the impact of genes on people’s behaviour.
By the end of the book, I was left wondering if the book was too dated for today’s audiences (it was written in 1988, and the amount of smoking was… surprising for example), and that might account for the lack of scares.
Oh and the end of the book, was unsatisfactory.
So all-in-all it was a bit of a mess

A ghost story with a twist?
The search to find out if someone is ready dead or not! The searcher might not like the answer.

As an avid Peter James reader, including the entire Roy Grace series, I did not find this book unput-downable and almost gave it up at one stage.

This is a chilling tale which leaves the reader feeling spooked. Peter James never fails to grip the reader from page one. An entertaining ghost story which also makes the reader think.

A completely different Peter James from the Grace series but a very exciting and brilliant piece of writing. Still a favourite author.
