Priest: A Love Story

£4.30

There are many rules a priest can’t break. A priest cannot marry. A priest cannot abandon his flock. A priest cannot forsake his God.

I’ve always been good at following rules.

Until she came. Then I learned new rules.

My name is Tyler Anselm Bell. I’m twenty-nine years old. Six months ago, I broke my vow of celibacy on the altar of my own church, and God help me, I would do it again.

I am a priest and this is my confession.

This is a weird book to me – I did like it, but it took me 4 days to read 360 pages and at times I had to force myself to read a couple of chapters just to get through it.

I really enjoyed this interesting take on sex, love and the Catholic church and when I finished reading it my initial thought was that it’s 4 stars, but the more I sat with it the more it’s probably a 3.75 to me. And that’s not because of the writing which is fantastic or the character of Father Bell who I thought has great depth and character development, it’s because at about the halfway point I was just bored.

The handsome 29 year old Father Bell is happy and fulfilled as a priest in a small rural community. After his sisters suicide he decided to commit his life to the church and he’s never regretted that decision. Then one day a young woman comes in for confession and so begins his complicated relationship with Poppy….a stripper.

Poppy comes from a life of privilege and wealth that she walked away from because it didn’t feel real, and she wanted to be something more than a trophy wife. And even though she’s not Catholic she is looking for purposes and guidance and is drawn into Tyler’s confessional booth.

As their relationship grows quickly from lust to love Tyler starts to question God’s place in his life, because how could the way he feels about Poppy be anything other than a gift from God? But is continually plagued with guilt and questioning his own motivations and desires.

This book isn’t really a paint by numbers romance. Poppy almost feels like a side character because it’s so focused on Father Bell’s relationship with God, with a large majority of the book being Tyler’s inner monologue questioning his beliefs.

And although I did like Poppy I never really felt like I got to know her, this story is 100% focused on Tyler which left me 100% not caring if they ended up together because I was only invested in him.

Having said that the characters are likable and I did enjoy it but it just dragged in places for me – still well worth checking out because I get why a lot of people love this one.

Don’t get me wrong the spice level of this book is a deep 4 at least if not a 5 for some people! And was very hot!
But the story line was dreadful. Mixing religion/church with smut and then the female character in a strip club was so odd it just did not work at all.

I’d be happy to try and read another book by sierra again, as maybe this was just a one off for me personally and it’s not necessarily her as an author.

Worth a read as everyone loves different story lines and then you can see if it works for you.

Although you do hear poppy’s POV a teeny bit, it is very much a single POV story I think. This for me is not what I’m used to, especially when the single view is from the MMC.

I really liked it. The story was great, as we’re the characters.

I know he is a priest, but there seemed to be quite a lot of bible story names in it, which is great for his priest life but not great for any reader who has no clue about the bible, I just guessed what they meant by each name tbh.

Overall, I really liked it and looking forward to the next book.

    Goodness, Father Bell ????

This was my first taboo romance in a while and it totally delivered in that category ????

I loved the whole premise of the story and it was so interesting to read the depth in which research/life experience was used to deliver the story.

I really liked Poppy! She was very mature, self-aware and just owned who she was, after struggling with her identity for so long. Tyler was such a tortured soul and it was sad to understand his reasoning for becoming a priest. These two were kinky MF ???? I won’t be stepping into a church anytime soon… or I might, but every scene was ????

I loved how the book was mainly from Tyler’s perspective, as this is such a rarity in romance books. However, I got whiplash from his internal monologue and felt like he strung Poppy along, till the most frustrating and unnecessary miscommunication happened ???? I would have loved more grovelling on his part.

Overall the writing and idea of the story were brilliant. I think I felt really underwhelmed by the ending and I didn’t feel a great connection between the MC’s. This book is perfect if you’re wanting a quick and v. Smutty read!

Also, thank you @creatingkristen for buddy reading with me ???????? onto the next!
