‘A memoir of great power and emotional honesty. To read this book is to be in awe of Spraggan’s strength in writing it.’ Elizabeth Day

By the age of twenty, Lucy Spraggan had already experienced more extraordinary things than many do across a lifetime. Growing up in a creative household, surrounded by artists, alcohol and raucous parties, by her late teens she had played pubs, clubs and festivals, fallen in love with an older woman on a US road trip, experimented with drink and drugs, and been in and out of police custody.

When her X Factor audition went viral in 2012, Lucy became the bookies’ favourite to win the show. She was the first contestant ever to write and perform her own original songs, refusing to be pigeonholed by stylists and producers. Viewers fell for her unmanufactured, anti-pop princess stance, and the tabloids loved her.

Then, suddenly, mid-way through the live shows, Lucy dropped out. The public were told Lucy was unwell.

Now, for the first time, Lucy is ready to tell her story, in her own words.

Process is a book about the vicious impact of trauma across a lifetime; it is about Lucy’s successes and mistakes, her journey towards sobriety, calm and something like peace. Most of all, Process is an extraordinary story about a gifted artist and an expose of the toxic underbelly of noughties celebrity culture and reality TV.

I have loved Lucy’s music for years, have been her gig quite a few times, she is an amazing singer and song writer. And now an author of a well written book. I couldn’t put the book down. Very truthful book on the ups and downs of her life. Heart breaking of hearing what she went through but her book is going to help so many other people who have been through similar experiences.

There are some books which you listen to and then read, which spark something inside you. From listening to someone’s story, and how you have those resonances and those aha moments, which stay with you. Reading Lucy’s book had many a moment for me. The perspectives, insights and wisdom that Lucy shares are going to change me, but doesn’t that always happen with special people? Their story empowers and brings about change.

Listening/reading was like Lucy opening up; it felt intimate and a true getting to see you fully process where she came from, the trials and tribulations, and the journey to where she is now, and I no doubt think there’ll be another a book at one point because she’ll definitely bring about change, I can sense that determination.

I’ve read many a story, heard many a thing, and know the power of sharing your journey, and I’m thankful for what she’s shared and let go of, too; it’s allowed me to let go of something, too, it empowers. It shows strength, and also courage, and also having the right people with you.

I love the pauses and self-refections, and letters to yourself, the true power of journaling/reflective practice, and it’s inspiring. I know I’ve already mentioned to some friends it’s a book to read, learn and grow from. There’s a fist bump / and a knowing look from me, which knows how much it takes to share those types of stories; I had admiration for her storytelling from her songs, but her writing is just as captivating empowering, and emotive.

What a well written book, I couldn’t put it down. Ive know of Lucy since she was on X Factor ive also had the joy of seeing her live, photographing and meeting her.

Im one of those that didn’t know why she left the X factor. So Its absolutely heartbreaking to read the real reason for her abrupt exit and how disgustingly she was treated, Also totally shocked by the way they covered it up.

The strength and courage that Lucy had to write what she has in this book. To share her deapest darkest stories as well as her more positive and light hearted ones is incredible.

Absolutely loved reading this incredible book, so real, true, raw and very inspiring. Thank you LUCY for sharing your story.

Genuinely haven’t read a book in approximately 6yrs and I read this whole book I’m 3 days. Could not put it down. This is such a true and accurate account of Lucy and all that she’s gone through. The good, bad and nasty. Lucy’s honesty throughout and making the reader feel very much a part of the journey says so much. It’s empowering and relatable to many many woman out there. Reading this book has given me the strength to speak some of my truth and help me move on with some things.

I knew from the moment Lucy stepped onto that stage on my TV that she was going to be someone very unique and special. Lucy has done all this on her own. Whenever you listen to any of her songs and close your eyes she has this amazing ability to transport you there and that’s exactly what happened whilst reading the book. When Lucy talks about being in a bar or in the casino for example, you can almost hear the noise from the bar very much imagine you’re there.

Lucy has always been an idol of mine, even more so now. The courage, strength and bravery Lucy has shown is remarkable and really shows how strong she has become.

I picked this up and wasn’t expecting to read it in one sitting. I was literally unable to put it down! Lucy writes so well, and her vulnerability within her writing made it impossible to pause for even a second.

In Process, Lucy details her truth for the first time ever.

When she left The X Factor, the public was told a story to protect Lucy from having the details of the most horrific thing she ever lived through, splashed across the pages of the tabloids. As Lucy tells her story, she recounts the MANY ways she was consistently let down and abandoned by those in charge at ITV. Lucy lays bare the worst moments of her life and details how she struggled to overcome those moments, turning to drink, drugs, and desperate behaviour in order to forget.

Lucy also confronts the truth and how she realised that she had to face everything head on, She realised that she had to stop running and actually feel.

It’s within this process that you truly understand the bravery that Lucy has shown and the constant determination flowing through her blood. Lucy actively runs towards the light now, instead of allowing the darkness to swallow her.

Whilst reading this book my heart broke for everything Lucy endured, I felt angry at the total abandoning of her from those who should have been by her side, rather than desperately trying to ensure their TV Show didn’t garner bad press.

Within the book, Lucy writes letters to her past self. Then, at the end, she writes a letter to her future self that really choked me up.

Process is such a raw and brave book, and anyone who reads it will most certainly take away something that will change their life/way of thinking. The strength it must have taken to even think about writing this book… awe-inspiring.

I can not recommend it enough!
