One minute Lou is happily employed, with a perfect flat. The next, her home and job have gone. Suddenly she has to start over.
The last thing Lou wants is to move to a tiny Cotswolds village. She certainly doesn’t intend to work for curmudgeonly eighty-year-old Edgar Allsopp. But Edgar is about to make her the kind of promise nobody could ignore. In return, she secretly vows to help him fall in love with life again.
Foxwell is also home to Remy, whose charm and charisma are proving hard to ignore. But Lou hasn’t recovered from the last time she fell for a charmer. She needs a distraction – and luckily one’s about to turn up.
Secrets never stay hidden for long in Foxwell, nor are promises always kept. And no one could guess what lies ahead . . .

First I thought it was a Lou-Remy love story. Then I noticed it was more about the Edgar-Lou relationship. Well, the blurb did suggest that, so, okay. Enter Della, the two-faced, golddigger leech and her similarly horrible kids and all of a sudden the story was about them and all the fuzzy feelings about the book got replaced with annoyance. Halfway through the book, and there has been no notable interactions between Remy and Lou, and I keep finding myself more and more enraged by how much of a doormat Edgar is, and I’m not sure who the book is about anymore and so I lost interest. The Edgar-Lou storyline was not the romance I was hoping to get when I picked up the book, but it was well written and interesting, up until the third or so of the book. Then it lost focus and it’s nowhere near what I was interested in and I just cannot fnd enough patience in me to keep reading to see if there were an actual Remy-Lou storyline, or any romance to mention. I liked ‘Mischief’ from Jill but this book could not hold my attention.

I brought this for my daughter as a gift, I thought she would like this as the storyline sounds good. It was priced reasonably well

I had been aware of this author for several years but only started reading her recently, I don’t know what stopped me before, but I’m making up for that now.
Her the characters are well drawn, some are nicer than others, they have human foibles, they make bad decisions, get their wires crossed and have insecurities, just as we all do, it makes for compelling reading. The rural setting, populated by a lot of friendly and sometimes, overly interested people, make it a delight to read.
It is a predictable romance but the journey you go on to get to the makes makes you smile, a lot.

Easy to read and thoroughly enthralling as are all Jill Mansell’s books. Happy endings are always nice too.
