Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: The craft of caring, Second Edition
£2.30
Supported by relevant theory, research, policy, and philosophy, this second edition of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: The craft of caring provides a comprehensive overview of the practice of psychiatric and mental health nursing.
The concept of “the craft of caring” dictates that the basis of good nursing practice is a combination of both art and science, encouraging nurses to take a holistic approach to the practice of psychiatric and mental health nursing.
Reflecting current developments in nursing practice and the understanding of mental health disorders, this edition includes twelve additional chapters, placing more emphasis on specific groups such as children and young people, women, older people, asylum seekers, and refugees.
Case studies include patients with anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder as well as victims of sexual abuse, those with an eating disorder, homeless patients, and those with dementia and autism.
The book also examines specialist services such as psychiatric liaison and spiritual care and includes discussion on psychiatric diagnosis and mental health legislation in relation to human rights.
This is an essential text for all psychiatric and mental health nurses at the diploma and degree level, as well as qualified mental health nurses seeking to update their knowledge. It will also be a useful reference for professionals in other disciplines such as social work, medicine, and psychology.

I found this book to be fantastic for delving into and retrieving the right piece of information for a recent essay. I like Phil Barker books as I find him so easy to understand and so interesting to hear his experiences of mental health – this goes for the other contributors in his books.

This book has everything in it…. Would 100% recommend to student mental health nurses!!!
I tend to use mine for references when writing assignments as its size makes it a nightmare to carry about.

This is probably the definitive work on modern psychiatric nursing, with a bias toward therapeutic engagement and person-led or recovery-led approaches. If you get only one (which would be stupid, let’s be honest) get this one.
by Kristie Carr
Essential for any mental health nursing student. I have so far used this in every essay as a reference and it will be my go to book long after I have qualified. Covers all sorts of diagnosis, treatments, theories, you name it! If you’re studying mental health you will not regret buying this!

Arrived promptly. Purchased in paperback but for the price received this at a value for money purchase price and in good condition.
This is an enormous book and is going to take me some time to get to grips with but it appears to be one of those volumes you should have to dip in and out of and so far it is already presenting itself as a good read. A more updated version is already available but this is the book I have been recommended and I just could miss out on the price.
