Dummies guides rarely disappoint on their advice, always providing the reader with a wealth of information on the chosen subject. I’ve been using them for years and have taught myself many software programmes with nothing more than the words of wisdom found inside, such as most of the Adobe creative suite.

What does always let the series down though is that, despite the colourful covers, the pages themselves are very bland. A tradition layout, black text/images and can be heavy going in places. It’s true of every one of the Dummies books that I own and this Puppies for Dummies is no different. Don’t get me wrong, the content is all there and exceptionally useful, but it can be a slog at times to get through it. I’ve got a number of puppy/dog books offering very similar levels of advice, and in some cases exceeding it, that have much more engaging photos, illustrations and text.

If you’re familiar with the Dummies guide, you’ll know what to expect. The book covers almost all topics you’re likely to want to look up. I just wish it was a little more engaging.

After getting a puppy a few months ago, I am always looking at different ways to help with certain behaviours even though I have had many puppies before over the years. Times change, so does dog training and I think its a good idea to keep up to date with modern training methods and I don’t think anyone can have ‘too much’ experience when it comes to training so I like to stay open minded.

There are some good and interesting parts of the book which are helpful and I think its a good choice if you are an absolute novice. Sadly not everything you need to know is in one book, puppies come in all shapes and sizes with all kinds of behaviour and following the general guides in this book does not work for every dog, particularly if your dog is quite sensitive as ours is, and not all puppies work the same.

Its a good all round book but I think more of a reading book perhaps to be read before you get the puppy to give you some background information, rather than relying on for all your training methods. Particularly house-training. There are other books on the market that I feel have better and more successful training methods.

This book is from the ‘. . .for dummies’ series and is a very simple, easy to use book about owning a puppy. The information touches on many subjects from before you get a puppy, what to look for from breeders or animal shelters to what to do once you get it home and how to train your puppy. There is lots of practical information. However, there are some issues with the book. The author repeatedly states that she covers this information in further chapters. This means in many paragraphs of the book she’s telling you to look in another chapter. This is annoying and disrupts the flow of the book. There are also incidences where she repeats the same paragraph over again, with one paragraph being repeated three times within two pages. I think this is probably a good idea to use in conjunction with another puppy book as I don’t believe it’s good enough on its own.

Is there anything these For Dummies books don’t cover? This book is very useful if you are a first time owner or considering owning a puppy. It has everything in it from different dog personalities to them first steps in his new home to your pup’s health to his needs including socialising and all aspects of training. Coming in at 384 pages this is no light read, there are pictures and illustrations to break up the constant barrage of text. The one thing I do find annoying is the “Americana” of the book, sometimes trying to be English and speaking English can be lost in translation.
I have given this book to my 9yr old daughter to read, as she needs the practice in both reading and puppy skills, so that is a bonus. She hasn’t moaned yet and will see if it pays off when she starts correcting my bad habits.

But overall this is a good solid book that has everything you need to know about your new fur baby, so I would recommend.

This is a very comprehensive guide to getting a puppy. The book begins by encouraging you to think about what sort of dog will suit your family and your lifestyle. There is a handy questionnaire that helps you focus more on what you do and don’t want. There is also a guide to the different dog groups which is very useful. The rest of the book covers how to find a puppy, socialisation and training, medical care, puppy-proofing your house, feeding etc. This book really does cover everything you might need to know. This is an American book so some sections won’t be as useful as they talk about American guidelines or how the shelter system works in the US. I would say most of the information is universal though.
