If you are looking to start in the amazing world of chicken keeping you can’t go wrong with this book – Very knowledgable and well written book – a lot of American info but to be honest being in the UK that was interesting knowing what happens in other countries – informative and obviously well researched which would provide any new chicken keeper with everything they need to know and loads of new info and tips for the more experienced keepers. Highly recommend

I downloaded this book while buying chickens and the necessary equipment.
This book was invaluable since I didn’t have a clue.
It helped me to pick a good coup and the right breed for our needs. It gave me so many insights into raising chickens and spoke about things that I never had considered. It also has a great section about how to spot disease and treat it, which I, fortunately, haven’t needed yet, but it gave me the confidence to treat minor things myself. It talks about the US and UK markets so it contains a little bit for everyone. All around a great beginner guide.

Great book for beginners. Used this to help me with my first flock of hens and found the advice very useful and helped me to identify what was happening with my girls. Really nice format and easy to read. Definitely recommend.

The author has clearly put a lot of blood sweat and tears into this book, and it is testament to her passion for backyard chickens, and I have to say – who can fault her on this?! Keeping hens at home is a tremendous joy, and needn’t be an ordeal for any family. The author puts the readers mind at ease very quickly, ensuring that the language and tone is accessible and the information provided ensures that nobody is daunted by the prospect of keeping some hens in their backyard.
The only reason I did not rate it 5 stars is that I felt the book was written very much for an American audience, and that needn’t have been the case. The book is therefore less useful or relevant for those of us in other locales due to references to USA policy or regulations. I am a strong advocate for everyone and anyone to be keeping their own hens, and I would worry that someone perusing this book might discount it due to the American slant. That being said, anyone with a little experience with poultry can navigate these nuances with ease and all in all it is an excellent resource and is sure to bring a lot of new members into the ever-growing flock of poultry keepers!

I loved this book and will continue to use it as a go to reference. It is such an easy read. Whilst it is written for the American Market (laws) a Chicken is a Chicken and as long as you know your Countries rules and regulations you can’t go wrong as these are minimal in this book. I found the reference to illnesses and diseases the best, giving a breakdown of symptoms. I also found the notes on different breeds very informative. I have read a number of books relating to poultry and have found that this contains everything you need without overload.
