Great handy book to use as a new infection specialist or to use on a ward for basic knowledge of IPC

This is an excellent resource for anyone involved in a paramedical support role such as Registered Nurse or Assistant Practitioner. The primary value is in the ready accessiblity of the relevant information, such as whether the condition is notifiable and the level of barrier care that should be implemented. Combine this with the treatment regime and you have most of what is needed in a handy size reference source. To improve it, as with other books within the intended context, it could be ring bound and laminated but that is about it.

This is a great book to give the vital information on infection control nursing. Guidance is clear and easy to understand, the book is very approachable and it is easy to flip to the required section. It is great for students and newly qualified practitioners, although many of the practices will quickly become second nature. I can also see this being an excellent book to send to areas in developing countries with less developed practices as a primer on stopping the spread of disease. Great book to fill that gap in your knowledge.

If you take your information directly from a newspaper I suspect that you’d think that every infection is a “flesh eating super bug”. Seriously – this is a book that every hospital ward/manager should have as it does explain most of the common outbreak of infections inside hospitals and how to attempt to protect the patient/staff/visitor. Whilst this will never be as essential as the bible that is the Royal Marsden – this however needs to be read and implemented.

Hygiene, Infection and Control is what this should be called. Hygiene (lack of) is what causes most infections, and is also how they are controlled. This short book tells you what you need to know for 99% of cases you will face. It is well written and edited, using precise language. The main systems of control are repeated many times so they become second nature. This is a perfect book for anyone entering any form of nursing or patient care.

The book is clearly laid out and easy to use.

An Essentials section explains topics such as the basics of infection, hand hygiene, decontamination, sharps practice, linen handling, and so on. A brief Wider Aspects section outlines topics like managing an outbreak, auditing, dealing with guide dogs, specimen collection, and stewardship of antibiotics.

The bulk of the book goes into more detail about individual infections or infestations, describing the condition and how it is spread and the particular infection control precautions required for each.

A very handy reference worth keeping in a ward.

From the renowned Wiley-Blackwell academic publishers, Authors,Sarah Ross and Shona Furrows, offer a comprehensive over view of conditions which nurses will encounter on wards. Aimed at students and newly qualified nurses, RICN covers the subject from the most basic issues of general hygiene, to look at spread of infection and control.
A useful primer for those students in particular who are about to take exams.
