This book combines comment on a number of topics of immediate current interest; modern diet and the related obesity and health crisis; industrial farming and the damage it is doing to our environment. Effortlessly and engagingly Henry Dimbleby explains how these crises are interrelated. Incidentally, the book offers the the most accessible and convincing explanation of the way human generated green house gases are at the root of these problems. Ultimately however, Henry Dimbleby is optimistic and shows that there is a way forward, which can generate abundant good food, better physical and mental health, restored biodiversity and environment Too good to be true? I hope not. Everyone remotely interested in the topics mentioned should read this book. It’s clearly written. It’s interesting. You’ll be better informed at the end of it. You’ll make better decisions regarding your diet. You’ll better understand what we must do if we are to protect the planet for coming generations to live well.

Big Food corporations, obesity, sustainability, carbon sequestration, rewilding, the list of subjects this book covers is extensive. One of the main messages is that “Food” is a system intereacting with many other systems and it’s gone wrong. Dimbleby rightly avoids apportioning blame for our ailing planet and bulging waistlines – even the politicians who commissioned and then ignored the recommendations from his official review, are depicted more as victims of a system that for many reasons we have allowed to run away from us. This is not another sensationalist doomsday book though. There are solutions but they are hard and it will take political courage to achieve them. The book offers balanced coverage of many of food’s polarizing themes : veganism, methane from cattle, food security & localism, rewilding – the result is a sober snapshot of today’s food landscape & how to improve it for everyone on the planet and for the planet itself.

A good book, but I realised just now that I never finished it, despute enjoying what I read.
‘Ultra-processed people’, and ‘Unprocessed’ are on the same broad topic and not only could I not put them down, I bought them both as Audible, so my other half could enjoy them, and told all my colleagues about them, possibly too much. ‘Ravenous’ wasn’t that good. Still worth adding to your library though.

Excellent book. Clearly expressed information from multiple sources pointing the way forward for food strategy in the UK and, more broadly, for global stewardship during the climate crisis.

I found this book a fascinating read and it increased my understanding of what drives the junk food boom and diet related unhealthy population. It is frightening that making the necessary changes does not seem to be on the government agenda or if it is it is not a high enough priority. The link to changing our food production to make it more healthy and efficient with positive benefits for climate change targets was a revelation. It is reassuring and gives hope that there are solutions available, however we need to start lobbying our politicians to make the policy changes. We will be changing our diet to at least two meat free days a week and reducing our consumption of processed foods! Thank you Henry for a really excellent book.

Excellent on the analysis of the food crisis, less so on the solutions.

Books are often described as a ‘must read’ but this one genuinely is. It should be compulsory reading for all of in the midst of this human health and life on earth crisis. It isn’t giving difficult or unrealistic advice for the small changes that each of us can make to improve our own health and safeguard the future of this little blue planet we depend on.
It is probably the most important book I have ever read and I am spreading the word to anyone who will listen. Best of all, there is hope for the future and a way forward. It is also fascinating – I couldn’t put it down. Thank you to the authors!

Wide-ranging and easy to read, this book explores what is wrong with the current food system in the UK and what can be done to put things right for people and the planet.
