This support includes parent-friendly notes for the activities at the start of the books to help children to practise the sounds and words they will encounter in the story. There are also notes for the questions to talk about at the end of the story to help parents develop their child’s comprehension.

Video support on www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home and www.ruthmiskin.com can be used alongside the books to help parents feel confident pronouncing pure sounds.

The books are part of the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, developed by Ruth Miskin. The programme is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. It includes Handbooks, Sounds Cards, Word Cards, Storybooks, Non-fiction, Writing books and an Online resource.

I really like the read, write inc series. My son isn’t covering this at school but we have these books at home for days he wants to do some reading and he’ll usually choose a book from this series. I like that they practise the same “tricky words” (the, she, he you, your, are, my etc) through out the series which means he’s now got really good at recognising them. The stories are quite short too which works well for young children. The levels go up quite gradually too – the red books were similar to level 1+ in ORT with the green books more like level 2. However my son found Read, write inc easier than ORT as they spend more time consolidating the tricky words so he was able to pick them up more quickly,

It would obviously be nicer to have these books in colour (so that the tricky words are in red and stand out – in the black and white books they are a slightly lighter shade of grey and my son doesn’t notice the difference) and in a sturdier form – these are more like pamphlets than actual books but they’re still definitely worth the price because of the way the reading scheme is designed.

The stories aren’t particularly engaging or amusing always but this is the best reading scheme I’ve come across for actually making reading enjoyable and boosting the child’s confidence.

I don’t want to dwell on the fact that this is a black and white book as every one has pointed it out already and is clearly written in the product description. But I do want to mention (see pictures) that some of the context of the book is removed from this being a black and white product albeit not entirely. Hopefully pictures show that some of the words in each story is meant to be red and green which all appears black or grey in these books. I would like to also point out that the quality of paper on which these books are printed isn’t very good so will have to be handled very carefully if you intend to keep it for more than one child (which I do).
I bought theses books because they are much cheaper than the coloured version of these books and our local library doesn’t seem to have them plus they can’t guarantee how soon will the books arrive even if we reserve them.
I have given these books 3 star because of the quality of the paper of these books. RWI program itself is world renowned and the start rating isn’t a comment on that.

These books have been very helpful with the RWI phonics program that my child’s school follows and were so necessary during lockdown to keep my daughter up to date. The only negatives are that they are black and white and I’ve noticed that the colour version has a slightly different word selection for the child’s learning focus at the beginning but I didn’t let that bother me too much.
