Real Life Money is a holistic approach to personal finance that addresses the deeper causes of debt and financial difficulties.

Part memoir, part guide, Real Life Money takes the reader on a journey that can be adapted to their own pace and circumstances. It covers everything from how to negotiate repayment terms with creditors and setting realistic budgets without punishing yourself, to dealing with money anxiety.

The goal is not to get rich overnight, or to pay off debt at the expense of all of life’s pleasures, but rather to gain an understanding of why we feel the way we do about money, and how we can use that to change our mindset and our finances for good.

This books is so relatable – I’ve read it in a day as it was too good to put down! I’ve been laughing and crying at how bang on the author has captured the experience of having debt and how that impacts different aspects of your life.

It was such a relief and I feel the laughter and tears have allowed me to release the years of guilt and shame around money management – the chapter on mental health and how this impacts finances and our decision making was completely relatable and as I continue on my journey to financial freedom, has allowed me to apply empathy and compassion to myself, whilst remaining accountable.

I’m really grateful for the author sharing her experience as a lot of things were all too similar. The Instagram Fiddle Leaf Fig plant scenario had me in tears of laughter as I could completely relate.

I have found this book liberating and motivating – especially for those of us who earn a decent wage but non-the-less, still find ourselves in financial strife due to a lack of education on how to manage finances. A lottery/competition win would do little to solve the problems in the long run without an understanding of finances and our motivations for spending. A fantastic book and couldn’t have come at a better time.

I’ve loved Clare’s Instagram for a while but for some reason have held off buying her book. I don’t have debt but spend more than I’d like to and struggle to save. With any promotion or payrise comes an increase in spending so although my hard work is paying off career-wise, I’m never seeing the financial benefits. For the longest time I’ve been frustrated and would tell myself to just buy less but then I decide I want to try a new cleanser and buy four because I don’t know which will be the best. This book breaks down the mentality behind spending and provides useful tools to help counter it and build a healthy relationship with money. My relationship with money is already improving and after budgeting properly I’ve created a realistic timeframe to be able to save for a house deposit – something I never thought I’d be able to do. The irony of buying another thing to help curb spending is not lost on me but this is one of the very few purchases that I’m not looking back on with any ounce of regret.

I enjoy following the authors Instagram account & bought this book as soon as it was released (actually ended up listening to it on Audible though) its fabulous she wrote this book as her struggles with spending linked to getting sucked into the constant Instagram comparison trap probably resonate with many, many woman. I related to so much & several times her feelings & experiences exactly mirrored my own. However, I already knew from her Instagram that despite the fact the author has debt she also has a household income far beyond most of us & has a credit score still in good shape which I definitely can’t relate too! We might share a similar debt, but with less than a third of the income I have zero hope (aged 38) of ever paying off anything, saving a significant amount or buying a house. It is a really helpful book & could put many on the right path, but for me it just triggered a huge bout of self loathing & despair about the future…

I finished this book in a day, it’s a nice easy read and it has a good layout too it.

There’s a lot of good information in this book and it’s nice hearing someones personal opinion on the matter instead of just being hit with fact after fact as some books do. There are some really good tips about how to speak to your partner/friends/family and good ideas on sticking to a budget. I also enjoyed the chapter on feminism.

The slight negative I have is I personally didn’t learn much from the book, I have been following Clare on Instagram as well as following lots of others from the “debt free community” and I’m almost at the end of my debt free journey.

I think this book is perfect for someone who isn’t in debt, or has just started their journey into becoming debt free. It is also great for young people to read to avoid getting into bad habits.

Loved this book! I ordered because I thought it would be useful in general, rather than because it was needed, but it gave such an insight into the ‘whys and hows’ of spending and I really did relate to so much that I didn’t even consider previously. Clare has not only provided great tips and advice on how to get on top of debt, but also how to recognise unhealthy spending habits and the psychology that sits alongside. I highly recommend this book to anyone – although it is marketed to a female audience – I believe it would be an amazing insight for anyone that wants to learn about money… I’ve quoted the book and shared it with so many friends and they’ve found it really useful too which is great!

I’ve read a lot of money books starting with Dave Ramsey and then Pete Matthew – both excellent and recommended – to books about FI and investing. This book is the best I’ve read and definitely the one I’ll recommend to others going forward. It’s got practical budgeting and resources for becoming debt free but the best thing about it is that it deals, comprehensively, with the psychology and mental aspects of debt which are so important and yet overlooked by most other books. The author is honest and open about her past issues with debt, and the reasons for it, and it’s this genuine truthfulness that sets this book apart and I think will resonate with most of us. There are a couple of aspects I disagreed with but they were very minor and to be expected – personal finance is personal and someone else’s opinion won’t always mesh with your own – but overall an excellent and refreshing viewpoint in the often staid world of personal finance. Highly recommended
