If anyone is interested in Manga or have a child interested this is a happy medium.
It’s got a great story and wonderful illustration. A nice little intro to Japanese style comic books and manga.

Bought this for my 11 year old who used to love reading but suddenly stopped. She’s into manga/anime, so I thought a graphic novel might just do the job, get her reading again. I bought two others at the same time – Primer and The City of dragons. My daughter put her iPad down the minute I showed her the books, got hold of them and ran off to her room to read. She loved reading all three books, finished this one in one sitting, occasionally shouting “oh my god this is brilliant!” I say that’s a result! ????
When she put the book down she asked to get the book 2 of this one, but sadly, that’s still a work in progress so she will have to wait a while! She said this one is the best one out of the 3!

Daughter begged for this book as she had started reading it in school. She was over the moon when it came the next day. Thanks

Amy Kibuishi has created a stunning piece of graphic storytelling – the start of a series to rock the worlds of Amulet fans.

A young heroine searching for the truth about her late father finds herself lost in a beautiful alien world full of magic and mysteries.

I had a good time reading this graphic novel, but not without some reservations.  The plot is great, I love the mix of fantasy and science fiction, and I like the characters. It is however let down by at times shaky worldbuilding – I got the sense that the author understands this world, but as a reader I had a lot of unanswered questions and things that confused me. I realise that it’s book one of a series and answers might come later, but it did harm my enjoyment a little bit.

I really love the art style. (I read that it was inspired by manga and I can definitely see that influence.) The world of Rema is beautifully depicted.  I couldn’t help flicking through the pages again after I finished reading.

Overall I probably will continue with the series, it has me intrigued enough to want to know what happens next.
