Lots of fantastically easy recipes to make (apart from the mead which can take up to one year to make! It’s easy to make but waiting a year to taste it must be a torture the likes of only Sauron could devise!).

It gives you the feel of actually making hobbit food or foods of the enemy and they are fun, great foods and drinks to share with friends especially if they also love the works of Tolkien. Who wouldn’t want to eat Lambas bread while sipping on Orc draught?

The book feels like it wants to keep these ideas simple so everyone can get involved and even if you’re not the best cook, there are more than enough recipes in this book for people to find something to their skill and taste.

The book itself has a lot of love poured into it explaining the food of Middle-Earth, little bits of lore from the series and some artwork to accompany this too.

If you want a little adventure in your daily cooking then I find this to be a great book and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Just don’t blame me if your find dwarves turning up at your door ready to devour your pantry.

Ok soo I never write reviews but the detail, illustrations and simplicity of the book is great. The person who wrote this is a total nerd and its adorable. It was a gift for someone else but I can’t put it down, I’ve made the hobbit muffins three times in the past two weeks. Get your feast on, worth every penny 🙂

I can understand the need to provide modern recipes because you’d only end up with the equivalent of a 1950s English cookbook if you stuck to Tolkien’s frame of reference, nonetheless some of the stuff here is a bit jarring and wouldn’t have needed much more effort to get right.

There are a fair few good recipes here, and the overall impression is good, but it is let down a little because a few recipe names are most definitely outside the canon: frittata! American style muffins! Potato and scallion rösti!! being particularly jarring, and there are more. Some of the recipes seem a bit odd and I have to make the observation that the pork pie recipe in particular is a travesty; I’m very sorry but it really really is – don’t use loin, use shoulder instead, and if you must use a shortcrust pastry rather than hot water pastry, at least use lard not butter, and use a decent streaky bacon from a traditional butcher, and leave the eggs out it’s a pork pie not a gala pie ????. I’m also not sure about lembas bread as a kind of vague north American cornbread; it always struck me as a long lasting travelling bread in the style of European volkorn or pumpernickel breads or one of the Scandinavian crispbreads; I can’t remember a cornbread that tasted good for more than a day.
