Religion and the Greeks (Classical World)

£16.10

No area of Greek life was wholly untouched by religion, and a basic knowledge of this aspect of life is essential to anyone seeking a proper understanding of the classical world. In this engaging survey Robert Garland brings out the unique quality of Greek religion – its practical and worldly approach to man’s relationship with the divine – and shows how religious ritual was integral to the daily routine of both public and private life.

A characteristically brilliant guide from the ‘Classical World’ series. Very informative and provides a clear insight into the orthopraxy and ritualism which were such an integral part of Greek religion. I would highly recommend this work, as well as others in the ‘Classical World’ series.

This is a set text for a paper I’m doing on Greek and Roman Religion. As an introduction to the topic of Greek Religion, it is very readable and informative. The Classical World Series offer fairly brief introductions to a wide variety of topics – from Classical Archaeology in the Field to Women in Classical Athens. They offer succinct and concise views on the major areas of the topic covered in the book. In this book, topics covered are:
    Olympian Suprematism
    Gods of the Underground
    Accessing the Supernatural
    Divine Intervention
    Doing the Right Thing
    Domestic and Neighbourhood Religion
    Outlets for Women
    Pollution and Purification
    Not Just Fortune-Telling
    Making War
    Holy Ground
    The Great Outdoos
    `Ars Non Gratia Artis’
    `From Here to There’
    The Dead
    The Afterlife
    Mysteries
    Alternative Systems
    The Great Healer
    The Enlightenment and the Sophists

Suggestions for further study, and for further reading are offered. The author is a specialist in his subject, having written several books including
    The Greek Way of Life
    The Greek Way of Death
    The Piraeus
    Introducing New Gods

So I feel comfortable allowing him to introduce me to the subject of Religion as the Greeks understood it. The book is engaging, readable, informative – everything it sets out to be. Highly recommended for any student or anyone interested in learning more on the topic.
