‘Desperately needed’ – Isabella Tree

‘I doubt any more important book will published this year’ – Stephen Fry

In this indispensable follow up to his acclaimed The End of the Line: How Overfishing is Changing the World, Charles Clover chronicles how determined individuals are proving that the crisis in our oceans can be reversed, with benefits for both local communities and entire ecosystems. Rewilding the Sea celebrates what happens when we step aside and let nature repair the damage: whether it is the overfishing of bluefin tuna across the Atlantic, the destruction of coral gardens by dredgers in Lyme Bay or the restoration of oysters on the East Coast of America.

The latest scientific research shows that trawling and dredging create more CO2 than the aviation industry and damage vast areas of our continental shelves, stopping them soaking up carbon. We need to fish in different ways, where we fish at all. We can store carbon and have more fish by stepping aside more often and trusting nature.

Essential and revelatory, Rewilding the Sea propels us to rethink our relationship with nature and reveals that saving our oceans is easier than we think.

I tried several times to get into this book because I thought it would be really useful background reading for work – and for pleasure. It’s awful. So dry & tedious. Endless self congratulating by the author over his past achievements. You’d think it would be hard to write something so boring & disengaging about the oceans – this book proves it’s not. Couldn’t get through it even in work time when I’m technically being paid to read it.

This is a book that should be a compulsory read for all politicians and fishery workers. It should also be read by anyone who cares about nature.

An urgent book for our times. I read the whole thing and am simultaneously sickened by the destruction and heartened by the efforts to save our oceans, which are vital for human prosperity. Down with trawlers!

This book is about such an important topic and will be a reference guide for future policies on global warming and food shortages. The author describes British success in the creation of the Blue Belt in the UK Overseas Territory waters. The chapter on Ascension Island is especially nail-biting, wondering whether the Blue Belt would actually happen. Closer to home, the author writes with affection about the shores of Lyme Bay, Dogger Bank and Arran etc. The book is not a dry scientific treatise but is written in a conversational tone, as if being narrated in the pub or at the kitchen table. Beautifully illustrated and presented.
