This is a TV tie-in for a new BBC TV series “Grow Your Own Veg!” by TV presenter and highly regarded gardener Carol Klein, who has collaborated with the Royal Horticultural Society to create a lavishly illustrated, easy-to-follow, practical and inspiring beginner’s handbook to everything anyone ever needs to know to grow vegetables, salads, and herbs all year round. “Grow Your Own Veg!” complements and builds upon the information covered in the TV series of the same name and provides all the practical know-how to get growing your own vegetables. Combining Carol Klein’s no-nonsense and enthusiastic approach to gardening, much loved by viewers of “Gardeners’ World” on BBC TV, with the horticultural best practice from the Royal Horticultural Society, this is a genuinely step-by-step beginner’s guide to growing an aspirational but achievable range of food plants. Whatever the size of a garden, this is a book to convert readers to the pleasures of growing and harvesting their own food plants. From preparing a plot, planning what to plant, and how to grow any one of the 40 featured food plants, this is a book to which veg growers can return every year, whatever their level of expertise.

I asked for this for Christmas because I love Carol Klein on the tv.She is so full of enthusiasm and encouragement to potential gardeners and the more experienced.I am a fairly experienced gardener and have grown veg for many years so this book is a bit basic for me but there is always something new to learn. The book covers everything from setting up your plot ,growing, harvesting and cooking your produce. It covers a good selection of veg and gives all the information you need for each one ,including how to solve any problems you may have. The pictures are good too.So whether you want to grow veg and only have a small space or have an allotment this book covers it all and is ideal for beginners as it is written clearly with no complicated word only known to the more experienced gardener.Although I have said beginners will like it I think any gardener will find it useful,I certainly have.I admit that I love gardening books and have loads but I think that I will refer to this one a lot as it is so easy to use and understand.

There are a LOT of coffee-table books out there which purport to help you with aspects of gardening. There are a lot of books full of fancy photographs and complex text. This book is as unlike those as are cheese and chalk. This is probably one of the clearest, best organised and well written books on this subject that you will ever find. Every aspect is thought out to the Nth degree – text is clear and descriptive without becoming overly technical. Photographs and diagrams are clear and useful. The organisation is as near perfect as possible.

All-in-all … this book is probably the only book on this subject that you will ever need unless you intend opening a market garden. And even then, I reckon it would be hard to beat.

A new house, with a fabulous garden & beckoning empty vegetable plot forced this purchase… Having looked at some of the other veg gardening books out there, this one seemed the most comprehensive without running the risk of alienating us by being too complicated.
I am pleased to say (one year since starting to grow veg as complete newbies), we have now grown some fabulous vegetables with this book’s guidance.
A pleasing & informative read that gets the balance between pictures & info just about right!
We have amassed quite a few veg books now, althouigh this is the one we usually reach for first (which says it all, really)!

Have used this book (now bought this second for a friend) for years as a bible for my allotment. The best useful sensible book we’ve found

My copy arrived yesterday and already has me planning my veggie selection for next year. Carol’s book is clear and concise, well illustrated and aimed at the newcommer, which I am. I do not have a vast allotment just a small plot conisiting of three one metre square raised beds in the corner of my garden. The growing information in the book can easily be put into practice on a small garden scale, or even smaller in pots, grow bags and window boxes. The selcetion of vegetables is a realistic one for the beginner and as you read through there is nothing too tricky or overly exotic and those which are more technical for example artichoke, asparagus come with all the relevant instructions – So if leeks, potaoes, peas, beans, squash, tomatoes, asparagus, onions and garlic are for you then so is this book. Great with a mug of cocoa and a hobnob!
