Having just acquired an allotment this book as been a great support for me as a novice allotmenteer. Simple explanations, plenty of clear diagrams, good pictures and excellent book signposting, all that I would expect from a DK book. The book has made me feel that I can grow anything very easily and so far I have had success with potatoes, radishes, beetroot, courgettes and pumpkins since late March. Buy it and get growing!

This was bought as a reference copy for down at my allotment. So the fact the front cover is sun bleached is of no consequence. Promptly shipped. Would use again and recommend this seller.

a great book if you are a beginner to small veg growing.
Lots of stuff like how to prep the ground, what to plant and when, some suggested plantings for different households.
I particularly like the suggested varieties for each veg so you pick what you like and not what the writer thinks you should be growing.
It doesn’t assume you know what they are talking about and explains stuff simply and in a practical manner.
a very good, sensible, reasonable book

The kindle version is not compatible with all new kindle(2019), make sure you read compatible device list before purchase. book itself is good.

I bought this as a present but would have bought it for myself if it was needed. I had a look through it and it gave very good practical advice for a beginner and even the different types/species of veg that could be grow in different situations. The person I bought it for was delighted with it.

Seems quite basic, even to a newbie like me. It does cover quite a lot of ground, but only tending to be in very brief detail, so it hasn’t proved to be the reference bible I thought it could be (also surprised that it was quite a small book – thinking that other DK titles had been the big A4-ish size, whereas this is much squatter).
The sections on individual plants cover quite a lot, but seems that much is kind of repeated – eg. details on planting out, spacing etc. repeated in similar terms for many items.
So, not bad, but not the next step I was after. My previous read (over the last couple of years) had been the River Cottage Handbook which I felt covered most of what is here and I think I preferred the writing style of that – all those RC handbooks give a real buzz & enthusiasm which I didn’t find here.

After receiving this book as a gift, we have purchased another copy for a friend. It is an excellent introduction to growing vegetables – full of clear and concise advise, and very importantly lots of pictures! We’ve been growing vegetables in raised beds, and the book gave great advice on which veg to put together. Following this book alone gave us great yields of cucumbers, broad beans, borlotti beans, courgettes (so many courgettes!), strawberries, and chillis – all of this in a couple of raised beds! Strongly recommend.

A gift for a friend who has had an allotment for a year but doesn’t know where to start with it. This should give him the confidence to make a start. I have this book already, I love it, it’s my go-to book for all things related to my vegetable garden. I would reccommend it to anyone already keen on vegetable growing or equally someone new to the hobby.
