Not quite sure how to rate it really as I’ve sorely misinterpreted the title. I thought it would be based upon the ‘varieties’ of specific vegetable groups (e.g. Sweet Sandwich onion vs. Alicia Craig) based on a culinary advantage such as flavour or suitability for given dishes or better fried or roasted etc. as opposed to giving me a basic rundown of vegetables in general & the origins of vegetables that I already know about. It’s more history book than anything else. It simply isn’t the book I imagined it to be so be wary of that title.

Fine new publication.

This book looks lovely. Pretty cover and end papers, nice photos of vegetable illustrations. The huge disappointment is the text. It seems intended for the beginner, and though I am more of an enthusiastic gardener-cook than a very proficient one I have struggled to find much useful advice. The problem is you would have to be ignorant about vegetables in general to find this book of use. A typical description is that provided for the aubergine “To many people, the aubergine probably looks more of a curiosity with its white or purple shaped fruits, rather than something appetising…Today it is treated with a similar contempt or sceptical attitude…” Oh, please!

Excellent service, super fast delivery and book brand new in plastic seal. The book was bought as a present so can’t review the product itself, however the receiver was very happy with it and RHS have an outstanding reputation so all in all great purchase 🙂
