Rocliffe Notes : A Professional Approach to Being a Writer: A Professional Approach For Screenwriters and Writer-Directors (Creative Essentials)

£23.70

This is a manual for screenwriters and filmmakers in the form of notes. These provide a step-by-step, common sense guide, with suggestions on how writers can best present themselves to the industry. This book does not explain how to write a screenplay. Instead, it provides insider confidences from established industry players and peers on how to have a professional approach to writing. A revelation for all would-be screenwriters, this is a guide to living the screenwriter’s life: the habits, creative processes and writing atmosphere.

I love the concept of this book. Like the author says in the foreword, there is no one big secret to making your way in this industry. Instead, she offers a wide variety of perspectives. The intelligent reader can learn a huge amount from “eavesdropping” on what successful screenwriters have to say, as well as the useful and honest contributions from producers, directors, agents etc.

The perfect complement to all the other screenwriting books you might have. There’s so much covered here: screenwriters’ perspectives on writing, feedback, producers, directors, agents, actors, and their take on screenwriters too. Setting up a writers’ group, networking, competitions, festivals, procrastination even. It’s encouraging and practical and real. I read the book from cover to cover very quickly and I now want to go back and dip into particular subjects that reflect where I am in my writing. I think I’ll be doing that a lot.

I have retained so many questions since I started my journey to become a Professional Screenwriter. I found that even after creative writing courses, those questions still remained unanswered until I purchased this book. It’s fast paced, quick and straight to the point. To be honest, the best screenwriting book I have read. The clever approach to tapping into the POV (Point of View) of other professional writers is priceless. I have found a whole new level of energy. This is one book you NEED to have in your collection. Thanks

Of the dozens of screenwriting guides and how-to’s (and I’ve probably read ’em all), this rates among the very best in terms of the quality, quantity and breadth of expert advice, all insightfully gathered and edited into sensible chapters. A particular strength of this book is that it speaks to the UK film industry, which has its own rules and quirks, not just to America. If you are intending to work in the film business rather than just dreaming about it, Abushwesha’s book is essential reading.

A positive, encouraging book with contributions from a variety of experienced voices within the industry. While some of the chapters are pure common sense (like, how not to approach a possible funder/collaborator), others offer valuable personal insights that prove writers don’t have to all beat the same, formulaic drum.

This book is absolutely stuffed with pearls of wisdom on writing, the industry and more. It reminds you that everyone working in film and television is human and works incredibly hard. A fantastic resource for those serious about improving their work and getting it out there.

Right up front, I’m one of the (many, many) contributors to this book. But as a working TV writer, I’d highly recommend all the rest of this fantastic guide to the industry. The range of voices assembled here is not just drawn from writers and directors, but producers, exec producers, agents… Essentially, Rocliffe Notes is a brilliant way to get into the heads of decision makers from across TV, radio and film production, as well as read some tips from emerging screenwriters. Deserves a place on any writer’s shelf.

I’ve read an awful lot of screenwriting books and guides and this is the first one that has offered perspectives from writers in all stages of the process. I really appreciate these insights and it’s really motivational to get thoughts and ideas from people who have a firm footing in the industry as well as writers who are trying to juggle full time jobs with a potential career in screenwriting.
Succint, informative, personal and very very useful.
