‘The best thriller writer alive’ – Ken Follett

Sometimes you have to fight dirty to get clean.

Sebastian Rudd takes the cases no one else wants to take: the drug-addled punk accused of murdering two little girls; a crime lord on death row; a homeowner accused of shooting at a SWAT team.

Rudd believes that every person accused of a crime is entitled to a fair trial – even if he has to cheat to get one. He antagonises people from both sides of the law: his last office was firebombed, either by drug dealers or cops. He doesn’t know or care which.

But things are about to get even more complicated for Sebastian. Arch Swanger is the prime suspect in the abduction and presumed murder of 21-year-old Jiliana Kemp, the daughter of the assistant chief of police. When Swanger asks Sebastian to represent him, he lets Sebastian in on a terrible secret . . . one that will threaten everything Sebastian holds dear.

I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this John Grisham book as, having pre-ordered it, I hadn’t read any reviews. I can’t agree with the people who say it is a series of short stories: Although it is not one crime defended by one lawyer, it is numerous crimes defended by the same lawyer, which is what I assume happens in real life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Rogue Lawyer and, although it is not a Grisham 5 star story, it doesn’t deserve to be downgraded to 1 or 2 stars and it satisfied my desire for something to read by one of my favourite authors.

Another cracker. Liked the format of breaking it down into almost being a collection, but with connections. Will get next one soon

This book has had mixed reviews and I can understand why. If you want the usual Grisham approach to intense detail and story line then you are probably best off leaving it. On the other hand if you want or are open to a more rapid and condensed approach to detail then this is a great book. Some people have said it is just four or five short stories which in my mind is sort of correct but they do all link and paint a picture that does make sense.
I get a feeling and I hope I am right that the main Character may well become the basis for a series of books and if so I’ll be buying them.
The main character isn’t a particularly nice person but then very few others in the book are very nice either and I happen to like the hero’s to be a bit anti so this read suited me just fine. Basically it is a fast paced read and I really enjoyed Grisham’s new quick fire approach.

Innocent until proven guilty. Isn’t that the theory? Which means that the lawyer for the defense simply has to show the holes in the prosecutor’s arguments and his client is released.

    Not so simple…

Sebastian Rudd defends accused people. Those who are clearly guilty as hell. And those who are innocent but are being railroaded onto death row. It isn’t a healthy way to make a living.

Set in an unspecified US city where high level corruption makes him persona no grata – the cops cheat, the mayor cheats, but Rudd cheats better than any of them. He wins more than he loses. But that doesn’t mean anything.

What can I say about John Grisham? One of the most successful authors in the world. There are dozens of books, and not many of them starring the same character twice.

I thought at first that it was a book of short stories, but gradually the episodes link up so you can compare and contrast. There’s a resemblance to Michael Connelly’s character Mickey Haller – both are defense attorneys, both take on defendants who are (shall we say) less than sympathetic characters. But Rudd is in an altogether darker key.

This is a new ‘voice’ for Grisham. There is a world weary cynicism from his latest protagonist, an almost contemptuous view of the law where there are only blurred edges and shades of grey. The use of the present tense drives the story along at a brisk pace. There is a broader canvas than usual, too, more threads – almost a ‘lawyer procedural’ if there is such a term. Rudd is a less likeable central character than most, a man adversely affected by the steamy side of his practice and one who tends to judge others by his own jaded views.
This all makes for interesting and compelling reading, another triumph for one of the world’s best storytellers. Why only four stars, you ask? Because I found the end too sudden. I wanted another chapter to find out what happens to the supporting cast, but it was not to be. This, I suppose, is in keeping with the style of the book. It’s a slice of Rudd’s chaotic life, but it still kept me frantically scrabbling at my Kindle trying to find just one more page!

Thank God this wasn’t a follow up to Mr Grisham’s last book Grey Mountain. That was a pile of junk and is best sent straight to the recycling bin!

Rogue Lawyer is a series of stories which centre around Sebastian Rudd the Rogue Lawyer in the title. The format is different to the authors previous books but this doesn’t distract from the fact that the stories are all well structured have beginnings middles and ends, were not rushed and were a pleasure to read. The central character Mr Rudd may not be the type of chap you’d want your daughter to marry but if you’ve just been arrested, he should be the first person you call. I hope for your sake he’ll take your case!

I should point out to begin with, for the sake of everyone complaining, that the price isn’t Amazon’s fault. That’s entirely down to the publisher. Yes, it’s daylight robbery but make sure you blame the right people.

With that said, I really enjoyed this book. I’ve always been a Grisham fan but some of his novels were becoming a bit too much of ‘more of the same’. While this is certainly a legal thriller, with a wholly unlikeable main character who seems to get worse as the book goes on but becomes more fascinating and interesting for it, it’s very different to his other books.

Rogue Lawyer is divided into sections, with each section dealing with a different case, although many of the threads started in one section continue on in in another. Grisham knows his stuff and manages to weave in topical issues alongside thrilling court scenes. While the female characters are incredibly one dimensional and stereotypical (hence four stars instead of five), the male characters – especially the different defendants whom Rudd represents are fascinating and he’s very skilful at manipulating your opinions of them. The cases, and the corruption, are all fascinating. I’d be thrilled to see more of this character in the future. Probably even at silly prices.
