Rosenshine’s Principles in Action
£9.50
Barak Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction are widely recognised for their clarity and simplicity and their potential to support teachers seeking to engage with cognitive science and the wider world of education research.
In this concise new booklet, Rosenshine fan Tom Sherrington amplifies and augments the principles and further demonstrates how they can be put into practice in everyday classrooms.
The second half of the booklet contains Rosenshine’s original paper Principles of Instruction, as published in 2010 by the International Academy of Education (IAE) – a paper with a superb worldwide reputation for relating research findings to classroom practice.
Together with Sherrington’s insightful and practical guidance, it forms a powerful booklet that no teacher can afford to be without.

Great book

I’ve had this for over a year and, thanks to this I’m a different, better teacher. I was stuck in a teaching rut. Applying these principles has changed everything for me and my students. It doesn’t have to take lots of time, either. Just changing the way I ask questions, how I explain and, crucially, finding out what the students already know has been transformative.
I have a lot of time for the author. All of the information in this book is freely available if you want it. Tom Sherrington writes numerous blogs and he has Rosenshine masterclasses free to view on YouTube. He’s clearly driven by a desire to support teachers and their students.

Mostly obvious, a lot or renaming of old, tried and tested concepts presented as something new – typical of a lot of educational writing.

Sherrington’s book is perfect reading for busy teachers. Whilst it is short and concise, it is nevertheless an incisive and a fully comprehensive guide to Rosenshine’s ‘Principles of Instruction”.
Sherrington gives context to the Principles in the introduction to his book, suggesting that they are worthy of our time because: (1) they bridge the gap between research and practice; (2) they are trustworthy because they have stood the test of time; and (3) they are recognisably authentic and will therefore appeal to busy teachers.
The introduction is followed by a more detailed section in which Sherrington explores the four strands of the Principles. It is here that Sherrington offers practical, classroom-based examples of how the Principles might be applied. This will have huge appeal for teachers and leaders of learning.
The final section of the book is a full reprinting of Rosenshine’s paper ‘Principles of Instruction’ which is most useful to put alongside Sherrington’s analysis of the ideas proposed by Rosenshine. Overall, this is a superb addition to any teaching and learning library and one which will surely become a standard text in time.

It is hard to imagine a more useful summary of well-founded classroom instructional practice than Tom Sherrington’s book. Presented in an easily-digestible style, complemented with excellent visuals, your copy will, if you are anything like me, sprout sticky notes of scribbled insights. In may cases, the ways of enacting the principles will be familiar to teachers. But the point is not to ask “Do I do this?”, but rather to ask “How well do I do this?” For that reason the book will be of great benefit to both expert teachers and novices. Most powerfully, it could be used in schools as the basis of collaborative professional development, with teachers meeting together, proposing strategies to implement and reporting back in a spirit of group accountability. There is no doubt that “Rosenshine’s Principles in Action” will be read and reread for years to come. and may set a trend in authors having the courage to write books which are brief, direct, and straight to the point.

For past 3 months I have been studying how to tutor learning about learning theories etc. Now this book is so helpful in advising the best ways to teach and the author has taken Rosenshines principles of instruction and broke them down into 4 strands that are both logical and so helpful when building confidence in lesson planning. This as the work book has really given me confidence in my journey into teaching.
I would say to any trainee teacher or tutor, buying this book and the workbook will really help you. It’s a valuable tool to keep by your side at all times. It’s small enough to fit in a bag and trust me this will be with me for a long time.
Also check out the authors master class on YouTube, this book follows it very well. Well done Amazon on acquiring this title. It should be a teachers best seller
