Passing great knowledge to my Grandkids in a fun way!!!
by Bookends & Bagends
Our eldest daughter (Year 4) is currently studying the Romans at school and this book has been a great extra boost in terms of learning about a topic she now loves.
We have a few of the Horrible History books and they are always well received and make the topic both fun and accessible. The illustrations, the interesting way of delivering facts (e.g. spoof news articles) and the balance of humour and facts seems to hit the mark well.
The only warning I would give is to be careful of your child is very ‘literal’. Our youngest daughter (7) has also started reading this book and came to me to tell me an “amazing fact”, it wasn’t a fact, it was a joke in the book – she doesn’t get the subtle difference between the two and the book doesn’t always make it clear!

As someone who loves history and things dark, odd, and humorous it’s no surprise I’ve got almost all of the Horrible History books.
I was interested to see whether this new edition was just a superficial reskinning, or if it was worth buying fo people who owned the first edition — it’s definitely worth buying this new edition.
I’ve uploaded a few photos just to compare the new (left) and old (editions) and there are a number of adjustments and improvements..
– There is more content
– The font is clearer and easier to read
– The presentation is far more engaging and is really bold
– Still just as dark and humorous as before
In my mind, as an existing HH: Rotten Romans owner I’d definitely say it’s work upgrading to the new version if you have it, or buying it if you don’t.
Kids will love it and can read it quickly taking in the great number of illustrations as can adults.

This new layout and font size is so much better! Old version was too small and had too much crammed onto one page, which could be off putting for a younger reader. Content was wacky and fabulously interesting.

As explained in the NOTES page towards the back ~ TERRY DEARY:
????‘…His history lessons were so boring and so badly taught, that he learned to loathe the subject.
‘Horrible Histories’ is his revenge.’ (!)
ooOoo
A revamp of
The Rotten Romans
from the same duo (1994), this version measures around 19.5 cm x 12.75 cm and has 190 pages, the last 4 being full-page advertisements for other titles in the range.
Simply black & white, it is the usual busy H.H. format in a variety of text styles from HUGE to quite small!
The WHAT’S INSIDE? page, as shown in the current stock image above, splits the book up into various chapters, namely:
~ TERRIBLE TIMELINES
~ THE ROTTEN ROMAN ARMY
~ THE CUT-THROAT CELTS
~ THE BATTLING BRITONS
~ ROTTEN ROMAN LEADERS
~ ROTTEN ROMAN CHILDHOOD
~ ROTTEN ROMAN FUN AND GAMES
~ ROTTEN ROMAN FOOD
~ ROTTEN ROMAN RELIGIONS
~ ROTTEN ROMAN FACTS
~ EPILOGUE
~ GRISLY QUIZ
…all sandwiched between an INTRODUCTION & an INTERESTING INDEX.
Worth noting from the inside title page (image below refers):
???? ‘Whilst this book is based on real characters and actual historical events, some situations and people are fictional. The advertisements…’

Our kids have been huge fans of Terry Deary and the Horrible History franchise.
They’ve seen and read it all. It doesn’t stop them from watching the HH shows repetitivly much to our dismay. I believe the material has gone some way into making some of our brood history buffs.
This book is a re-release of Terry Deary’s original Rotten Romans book. The literature is exactly the same. The layout however, is totally different.
It’s written in the fashion of tabloid newspapers, magazine articles, pamphlets, leaflets, columns and advertisements.
This new layout has captured the interest of our little one who hasn’t quite discovered the horrible world of Horrible History. It is certainly designed to make history less “boring”, for want of a better word. Written entirely in black and white, what stands out is the varied fonts, the large captions, the disgusting titles and the ‘horrible’ sketches. All of which are lapped up with great interest in our household.
Our eldest read it again – in a single breath – just to “relive his younger days”. He likes the new layout and says it will appeal to the younger crowd that need some excitement injected into their understanding of history.
