This is a stonking travelogue of a book, listing some iconic runs and trails, and others that only those ‘in the know’ would have heard of.
Some of the runs are indeed real marathons, others are endurance tests for the serious runner and others are more picturesque jogs.
Images from the London, New York and Boston marathons along with maps of their routes are great – even if you’re not intending to run them yourself you could follow all or some of the route on a walk through those cities. I was surprised to find how much of some of these routes I have already travelled – London, New York, Munich. Some I would never get anywhere near – Marathon des Sables anyone?
This book is a glorious coffee-table book with beautiful pictures of sometimes breathtaking scenery that also gives serious information about distance, altitude, tips and entry details for particular runs and races.
At £20 (as at 28 May 2023) I think this is a well priced book that travellers and athletes alike would treasure. Would recommend.

Part of a new series of travel inspiration books, this Run book from DK can be accompanied by Hike or Ride depending on your preferences. Each of the books brings together an inspiring set of options from across the globe with interesting ways to see a place.
Inspiration is probably the right word for the level of detail you are getting for each of the journeys here as most are covered very briefly. Some are more well known, international events but there are also ideas in here that I hadn’t heard of. There’s a little bit of text and photos to give you a feel of what to expect but you’ll need to go elsewhere for the detail.
Overall then this is fine for that high level overview and inspiration, though like many of these travel type books I fear it might end up just sitting on the coffee table.

This is a specialist, hard-backed DK book focussed on trails and marathon runs across the world.
Beautifully illustrated, nicely presented and fabulous quality as you may expect, this has maps, elevation details, registration outlines (if racing ) and other valuable information such as kit and what to expect generally. I have heard of a number of these races including Man v Horse which also briefly details its history. Refuelling and pushing yourself still further in doing ultra distances are also variously discussed. As indeed, are short runs such as the fun-sounding Kangaroo Island Parkrun (5 km) which takes place on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. I would not mind participating in this one at all!
I am a runner but also a hiker and some of the distances described here would make this most do-able when travelling. However, I am disappointed by what is offered around in London – it is a choice of either Bushy Park or the London Marathon. Clearly this book is far ranging and not fully comprehensive.
I do take issue with the synopsis on the reverse of the book: ‘Take a loop around stunning Lake Bled….’, this states. I have done this loop and it is beautiful. However, Lake Bled is not in the index and it is only referred to when discussing Lake Bohinj Loop, Slovenia (p. 128).
Nonetheless, this informative book is as varied as it is interesting: what a unique offering for an athlete.

This book is a very nice book which provides running routes from around the world. If you’re a keen runner and traveller (or would like be), then this could really be provide you with some inspiration of what to do next. Indeed we’ve read about where we’re going on holiday next and plan to do at least part of it whilst out there.
The book itself was in perfect condition and although £18 isn’t cheap, it’s a reasonable price for this book.

Run is part of the Dk Eyewitness series, with Hike and Ride, being the other two books so far. This hard back book currently sells for just under £19.
This book looks at the 100 top run races and trails around the world starting off in America with Melissa’s Road Race in Banff Canada and going all the way around to New Zealand and the Pigs Backyard Ultra.
The book is just a jumping off point to inspire you. Each of the 100 runs has a short bit of a write up, a run profile and maybe a picture. I guess you need your laptop of phone close by in order to delve deeper into the events that you might find interesting.
A good coffee table book to pick up now and then.

worth having this book to look at as there are a lot of great photos and info on most iconic races

The book itself is nice. However I received a damaged book. It’s really annoying as I don’t want to return this book for a replacement as that feels wasteful and unethical. I would like a partial refund.

in this book you get a good range of races across varying lengths, the main focus is North America and Western Europe, but there are still plenty from other countries and continents.
The layout is quite sleek, focusing on a basic map and a written overview of the course providing tips and points of interest.
I’d perhaps like a few more images to set the scene, there’s not a great many there and they are often small though relevant.
Overall I enjoyed looking through and dreaming about to some of the courses mentioned.
