I’ve had this book since 2008 and recently rediscovered just what a great cook book this is, there’s a bit of everything with no faffing.

Some good interesting recipes and I love the little tips after most so even the basic recipes can have a twist to them: great buy

Excellent cook book, simple recipes, got me through my degree with as much money as was possible. Definitely fills a hole. I still use it to this day for some things, the recipes, generally, work very well. It’s a very good book for beginners, but, unfortunately, doesn’t expand much beyond the beginnings. However, I learned to cook nice meals with this and the book does encourage some level of experimentation with flavours as you progress your own cooking, so highly recommended.

I bought this for my grandson as he’s keen on cooking. He really liked it and has made quite a few of the recipes. Much appreciated by his family!

Forget about the title the cookbook is not just for students it’s for everyone I would never be without it. It is a must have in the kitchen it is absolutely packed with content and recipes with various options and idea’s. It’s the best Sam stern book I own. Over 250+ pages each page spread has three recipes.

This is a good cookery book and not just for students. I agree that the style is slightly patronising, there’s too much fake matey, Jamie Oliver inspired, “slap this into a pan” and “wodges of that” and I could have done without the misty eyed shots of Sam, however the recipes are great and that’s what counts. I’ve been more inspired to cook by this book than any number of coffee table volumes with glossy full size photos – this book is practical, dog eared and in constant use in my kitchen.
Pizzas turned out really well, for the first time I produced a perfect omelette – crisp on the outside, melting and gooey with cheese in the middle and the corned beef hash where you use lemon juice and herbs to “lift” the flavours is a family standard now. And, as promised, its just as good cold as hot. There are also lots of suggestions on how to vary a basic recipe if you have a bit more cash or even vary what you do with the leftovers so that you don’t feel as though you are eating the same meal for 3 days running.
Not all of the recipes require a lot of equipment, some of them are very simple, some of them less so. I’d say that there are enough recipes in here that you can filter to suit your own circumstances and still have plenty of inspiration.
This is the first recipe book I go to for simple, quick meal ideas and I love it.

Both my family and I use the other three Sam Stern books so much that I pre-ordered this before it was released. It has not disappointed – this is a stylishly presented book with an impressive range of recipes for all abilities and budgets. Sam is writing for students but don’t let you put that off if you are not a student. There are recipes in here for everyone – whether you are studying, working or at home with the family. And in the current economic climate, the helpful key indicating the expense of each recipe will help you entertain or cook for your family without bankrupting yourself! In summary, a lovely looking book full of recipes that will get you and your family into the kitchen. As Gordon Ramsay says on the cover, don’t enter the kitchen without it!

It just shows you – even though we may be old there are good things to be learnt from the younger generation. This book is easy to understand and full of common sense. I have adopted and use regularly many of the receipes in this excellent book. You don’t have to be a student to be busy, short of time and money. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes good, no nonsense food that is value for money, easy to prepare that impresses!!
