This is the first book I’ve read from Mihwa Lee and boy did I love reading it!
It is set in the first half of the 1800’s. A time when there were no workers rights and women were the possessions of men.
The story follows Alexi, the disowned granddaughter of a Viscount and Arthur, the Marquess of Salisbury; a renowned rake who has a reputation of taking advantage of young women in his service.
Alexi lives with her maternal aunt. Her aunt wants to get rid of her strong willed niece who works for her as a governess.
Arthur has two children under his guardianship and need a governess. Alexi is sent by her aunt to become his new governess. Alexi is not happy about this, fearing she may become his next conquest.
The relationship between the two starts off badly but over time and being in each other’s company, witty banter starts developing between them. Over time they fall in love but it doesn’t run smoothly.
The storyline has flashbacks of Arthur’s very sad childhood, giving insight into how and why Arthur behaves like he does as an adult and why he’s tormented by the man he thinks he is.
This book takes its reader on a rollercoaster of emotions and situations that will make you laugh and cry within a few pages.
There are very strong side characters that share a lot of the pages and they really enhance the storyline. I hope there might be follow on books of some of these characters as I would love to know more about them.
It is a slow burn historical romance but it is so beautifully written you wouldn’t even notice. When the steamy moments do happen they are open door and highly steamy, with some swearing. These scenes are well written also.
This book has everything a reader could want; conflict, sadness, anger, love, humour, angst and finally forgiveness. There is a wonderful epilogue too that is very funny and steamy. I just love this book! I can’t wait to read it again.
Congratulations Mihwa Lee on a fantastic first book!
