I live by the coast, I am on the water a lot and like to learn new things. I like this book as it keeps things simple, digs into some of the local traditions, cultures without being exhausting or waffling on like in some books.

I got a second book to put in a holiday apartment as it will help guests get a better understanding and inspiration.

A joy to take on holiday to the coast and a lovely book to dip in and out of!

I am not a big reader and struggle to finish a book. This one however bucked the trend and I couldn’t put it down. It was a perfect mix of super informative teaching me loads of amazing things like how tide actually work and what the different type of sea weeds are with also some amazing anecdotal stories, sea shanties and poems. I can’t recommend this book enough. I want to read it all again so that I can become as knowledgeable as Meg and Chris.

For anyone (all of us?) who loves the sea! This is an wonderful compendium; fascinating, informative, witty and whimsical. It is thoroughly researched and beautifully written in an engaging and accessible style. Finally, I understand the physics of tides, not to memtion the mysteries of the shipping forecast. This is a book to dive in and out of, but I read it cover to cover.

Interesting little read with some lovely elements of myth, lore and practical advice from fresh molluscs and how to prepare them on the beach to knot tying and decryption of some of the more crazy sailing language that can cause confusion and embarrassment.

Nice little book, well written with a good pacing that keeps you reaching to the next chapter

This has been described to me as a cross between Swallows and Amazons and Schott’s Miscellany. It is a collection of pieces for any salty sea dog but even land lubbers like me can find joy, amusement, education and suspense within its pages. I had no idea of the Great Flood of 1953 and was gripped by the description of how that night unfolded. The 8 year old found much to work on in the Stone Skimming section. I laughed at the sandcastle building instructions and I’ll be taking golf balls to the beach in the future. This is a clever, funny, charming and exhaustively researched book.
