Sea Monsters: Prehistoric Predators of the Deep
£3.20
In prehistoric times there existed creatures bigger and often fiercer than dinosaurs, whose exploits have inspired more terrifying legends than any other group of animals. Their watery home has kept them hidden from view – until now. Following on from “Walking with Dinosaurs” and “Walking with Beasts”, “Sea Monsters” once again recreates the prehistoric world, giving us an insight into the underwater environment of that time and the strange and fascinating creatures that dwelt there. The leading wildlife television presenter, Nigel Marven, explores their world through a series of “encounters”, where he dives deep into the past and swims with these extraordinary reptiles and mammals. From the fearsome hunter, Liopleurodon, one of the biggest predators that ever existed, to Megalograptus, the most vicious of the spiny sea scorpions, the deadly prehistoric seas are vividly brought to life as we see these creatures through Nigel’s eyes. Some of the ancestors of these predators exist today, but even the great white shark and blue whale cannot come close in threat and size to these prehistoric species. Illustrated boxes describe the latest scientific evidence that led to the reconstruction of these creatures, with details of the modern sites, from New York to Egypt, where water once covered the land.

I really enjoyed this book , it provides great accompanying information to the mini series, including lots of great photographs , details of each creature featured and comments too from Nigel Marvin too .
If you are lucky enough to own a DVD of this mini series this book will really assist in expanding your knowledge of the subject material , plus as a stand alone book it stands up in it’s own merits I feel. However though I must add it’s not an in-depth publication as such for academic study but more just as a basic reference book for general interest.

This excellent book deals with the horrendous sea monsters that roamed the oceans for 450 million years up to virtually the present time.
There are7 chapters covering the eras ordovician to pliocene.
very well written, researched and illustrated with many fascinating insets which greatly help to understand what the whole story of sea monsters is about.
The illustrations and notes on individual monsters are no doubt the best you will find in any book.
The book is a credit to the BBC.

I can strongly recommend this book for all fans of the Walking with… series, especially the specials with Nigel Marven. I consider Sea Monsters to be one of the best Impossible Pictures productions, and one of the best dino documentaries of all time. The book, just like its predecessors, the books Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts written by Tim Haines, serves as an addition to the TV series, providing more detailed information about the geological periods in which the episodes take place, and about their animal inhabitants. It contains lots of colorful images, promotional images from the show, plus many additional photographes. Nigel Marven and Jasper James did wonderful work with this book.

Excellent book to accompany the series – plenty of pictures and good details in the text. Everything from the series is covered well. My 5 year old adores the series, and the book – he has been reading it everyday for weeks now! I am really happy with the purchase as there is so much in the book it will last him years and years.
