Seats of London: A Field Guide to London Transport Moquette Patterns

£11.20£14.20 (-21%)

Moquette is the carpet-like fabric covering the seats we sit on in London’s Tubes, buses, trams and Overground trains – and here is a brilliantly colourful guide to all its patterns. London Transport has always wanted the best design, be it Charles Holden’s superb art deco Tube stations on the Piccadilly Line, its elegant Johnston typeface or Harry Beck’s Tube map. And this pursuit of excellence has extended even to the design of the fabrics it covers our bus and Tube seats with: moquette. In the Thirties top artists like Paul Nash and Enid Marx were commissioned to design patterns; nowadays every line like Crossrail or the Overground gets its own unique, colour-co-ordinated moquette pattern. Now, in conjunction with the London Transport Museum, which has the definitive London Transport moquette archive, Andrew Martin has written a delightful, surprising and covetable guide to all these patterns, from the first horse bus to the latest Tube train.

Who’d have thought that this esoteric little book about London Tube line moquettes could be so much fun but it is!

This is a well illustrated book about the moquette used on London’s transport. There are many which I had not seen as every type of Underground train now has its own design but it also included past designs which I remember well. I learnt a lot from this book and that is from an old Londoner who has studied Transport for over seventy years.

We bought this for our 11 year old grandson’s birthday. He is into everything connected with transport, particularly London transport, and he loves it. The book is well set out with excellent photos and text that has provided him with interesting facts about the history and design of moquettes.

I picked this up on a whim.

It arrived at dinner time and our family sat around the table for 90 minutes after the meal reading bits of it out to one another.

A fab little book – funny and compulsively readable. I bought two more for gifts. If you live/have lived in London, grab one for yourself.

What might you expect from a book on transport seats? It’s nerdy, full of small details and the necessary illustrations. Production quality is high as you’d expect for a book on design.

Good quality and interesting narrative and excellent photos. A must for a transport nerd like my recipient!

Purchased this book on something of an impulse plus an urge to indulge in a whiff of nostalgia. I was not disappointed. Superbly illustrated it is a volume to be treasured and reread at leisure. The author will be known to many transport enthusiasts from his TV appearances and fiction.
