Sentence models for creative writing: A practical resource for teaching writing
£11.40
Teaching at sentence level is essential to improve writing. Knowing this, I desperately searched for a book packed full of sentence models that I could use to inspire my students. On discovering that no such book existed, I spent the next year poring over hundreds and hundreds of books to tap into the magic formula of what makes a great sentence. I sorted all these fantastic sentence structures into the domains through which we write stories: action, setting, character, feelings, physical effects, thoughts, the senses, and dialogue.
This book contains hundreds of those sentence models. Each chapter also contains practical advice on effectively teaching the different aspects of story writing. The sentences can be used as creative writing exercises, inspiration for your exemplary text, or ideas for writing lessons. This book will reveal the magic formula behind great writing and give you a secret window into how this writing is created.

I felt compelled to write this review because this book has already been so useful in my teaching of English. Sentence structure is something I feel passionate about (no, really!) because we often teach children about the value of verbs, adverbs and adjectives, but not always about how to construct different types of sentence to add variety to our writing. I have worked my way through the action section and made a set of PPT’s using the brilliant ideas and examples in this book – my class have really enjoyed the work and playing around with the construction of sentences has really made them think – and also feel proud of the sentences they are writing!

Good book

This is a great collection of model sentences to have to hand when teaching creative writing. Even better, there are clear explanations/suggestions as to WHY you might use them. As a teacher I often find what pupils don’t do is craft their writing; they’re not thinking about what they write in a particular way. As I prefer transactional writing, teaching creative writing is.nit my forte as I struggle to explain why pupils’ writing isn’t engaging or effective. This book means I can now explain it clearly, in terms they will understand, as well as providing me with clear models explicitly teach.
