Shakespeare’s Macbeth like you’ve never seen it – or read it – before!

Classics in Graphics: Macbeth has been adapted into a graphic novel by expert authors, Steve Skidmore and Steve Barlow, with illustrations by Jason Millet and Edu Rubio. The tragic downfall reads like your favourite action film – as Macbeth’s desperation becomes more and more deadly.

Classics in Graphics is a series of graphic novels for children aged 10 plus that has inclusion at its heart, flinging wide the doors of literature for everyone to enter and understand. Including dyslexia-friendly design on every page, and encouraging readers to relate to these iconic roles – casting spells, falling in love and winning duels.

Each graphic novel includes pitch-perfect illustrations for presenting the tragic, the romantic, the comedic, the magical, as well as:

– snappy simplified text presenting Shakespeare’s themes clearly
– introductory materials to help set the scene and context of each story
– heaps of extra material at the back to keep the learning and fun going, including an exploration of themes in the play, the language, Shakespeare’s inspirations, the publication and performance of the play in history, a timeline of Shakespeare’s life and works, and much more!

Plays available in the series include:
Macbeth
The Tempest
Hamlet
Romeo and Juliet
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Much Ado About Nothing

Praise for the Classics in Graphics series:
“Excellent production and binding, quality paper, and with fantastic writing and illustrations – an encouraging entry point to Shakespeare for my kids, and ease of dive-in for my own flighting or cursory storytelling engagement/whimsy […] an excellent job converting challenging language and literary themes to make it very inclusive, smoothing ease of understanding dialogue, plot, and narration without dumbing it down. Each book has a wonderful appendix including notes on Shakespeare, relevant maps and themes (i.e. for example in Hamlet it goes deeper into its themes of Revenge, Madness & Mortality), and a glossary. For a graphic novel adaptation, I think these books are delightful. […] They are wonderful and have quickly broken down the wall of “fear of Shakespeare” in my house as they are so easy to read and engage. And they have a really nice tactile production value, heft, and readability that makes broaching these often deemed difficult works, FUN. And of course, they are nice to look at.” – EricWilliamson, www.leagueofcomicgeeks.com

Knowing that Macbeth is one of the gcse texts for my son doing GCSE English next year, I got this book to help him familiarise with the text in another way. Reading the play in graphic novel form is an easy way to get really familiar with the plot line, and may give him some visual reminders of what exactly happens in the story.
This book also has some information pages at the back, a glossary and a guide to some of the Shakespearean language so it helps make the text more accessible.
I got the book for my 14 year old boy but it’s also accessible and interesting for my 11 year old to read too, especially as the quality of the illustrations is very eye catching and beautifully done.
I would recommend this book as a good way to introduce children and teenagers to Shakespeare in a new format that may grab their attention and for anyone who enjoys graphic novels, to try something different. This combination of the classic and a new modern format, works really nicely in this book

We love this. It covers the story of Macbeth coherently and with enough of a nod to Shakespeare’s original language that it feels authentic. However, the comic book format adds interest and helps make sense of the story.

At times, the editing that is needed to make the graphic novel a reasonable length leaves the story a bit ‘hollowed out’ but this is a small price to pay. The extra info at the end is also great. Recommended!

As my youngest daughter is about to start her GCSE’s, and Macbeth is one of her set texts, I jumped at the idea to get this for her as a means of offering her another version.
This is just fabulous. The overall layout, the presentation and the way the plays action is intensified throughout makes for a thoroughly interesting read that certainly adds another dimension to the play. It’s also so good to see a woman of colour as Lady Macbeth.
The additional information at the end of the book is valuable and approachable and offers the reader a little more background into Macbeth.
Overall, I cant faulty this and my daughter will undeniably find it a valuable source as she moves through her studies.
So highly recommended, especially for those students attempting this set text for the first time.

What a brilliant way to introduce children (or anyone really) to Shakespeare before they think it’s boring.

Translated into modern English and presented in graphic novel format.

A great study resource as well with exploration of themes, the history and the development of language.

Really impressed have added a few of the others into my wish list.

There is nothing like a good Shakespeare play and Macbeth is a classic, so this graphic novel is an ideal introduction or supplement to the actual play, the graphics make it more attractive along with the simplified English.

I got this for my teenage daughter for her GCSEs, she did like this graphic retelling, but did say that whilst it was good, you do need the actual proper version for the quotes, Ye Olde English is a necessity and needs to be understood for the exams.

If truth be told I think I enjoyed this more than my daughter, well put together and retold with good research and keeping to a large degree faith in the classic work, though some of the old English has been taken out for normal English for kids to understand.

I would say that this graphic novel is a great introducer to youngsters who either want to read Shakespeare, or, if like me, you want your children to be conversant and aware of classics like Macbeth, if so, this is a good novel to get, reasonable priced and certainly worthy of five stars.
