It is too descriptive and too much irrelevant material for modern LLB crime course.

I found it lacking across the board even. I would still put it in the top 5 student books but just. The leading book in criminal law is the Williams & Baker Treatise (it is not a student book and is almost 3 times the length of Smith and Hogan so it would be unfair to compare that master book with a student text). The top student texts are Simester and Sullivan and then Ashworth and Horder. I’d put Smith and Hogan about 5 in the student texts if I was ranking it. It is at least equal to Cross and Jones. The Essentials Smith and Hogan by Jonathan Child PhD is a really good student text for non-Russell group unis. The main Smith and Hogan is not a good fit anywhere.
