So, I’ve Got Parkinson’s Disease

Terry Rummins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 10 years ago. So, I’ve Got Parkinson’s Disease is her story and covers her diagnosis and the progression of the condition – from the first warning tremors in her right hand to her day-to-day life now. When Terry was first diagnosed she didn’t know what to expect, veering wildly between visualising herself in a wheelchair within a few months and not really believing that there was anything wrong with her. Parkinson’s is a paradoxical disorder. ‘On’ and ‘Off’ are terms used to describe the regular and debilitating changes the Parkinson’s person can experience as a result of the interaction between symptoms and medication: from feeling well to the feeling of having aged twenty years in as many minutes. Terry stresses the importance of learning which symptoms are a result of the Parkinson’s itself, which are the results of taking particular drugs and which are as a result of environmental factors such as stress and diet. Terry has written this book in the hope that describing her experience will benefit others who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and to help them understand their expectations of how the condition may affect them. This is a candid story, told with humour and contains a positive message for those recently diagnosed and those close to them. It is also for anyone interested in what happens when life presents an unpleasant surprise.

This is a must have book for those newly diagnosed with Parkinsons, their carers and families. It is a non medical book which communicates in an excellent form problems the author has experienced and ways she has learned to cope on a day to day basis. Most people just see a Parkinson’s sufferer as somebody with a shake. It is a much more complex neurological disorder which can be quite difficult to explain to friends and family. I downloaded this book onto my Kindle and read it in two days. It has helped me, having being diagnosed with Parkinsons nearly a year ago, explain some of the problems I experience in daily life to friends and family

My mum really related to this and felt supported by knowing she wasn’t alone in her experiences. Not too heavy, technical, or medically orientate. Easy solutions to every day problems. I would say that this is a perfect step into learning about Parkinsons, esp, if you or a loved one have been diagnosed.

just what is happening to me and how to deal with it. I can relate to so much in this book. A worthwhile read for those suffering with Parkinson’s and anyone wishing to learn about PD.

I chose this book as I am a Parkinson’s sufferer myself and wanted to read the views of someone in a similar situation.. It was a good book but towards the end I found myself loosing concentration.. Perhaps it was just a little too long and detailed.
I would advise others to read it though.

I bought this for a friend who has just been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and wanted to know what to expect. Initially I tried to do research online, but the links feeding off to different points made it difficult to collate information for someone offline.

The reviews on this book seemed to be ideal, giving a personal account of what to expect and suggestions on how to cope, rather than a factual medical style account.

I read the book before giving it to my friend and felt it was a perfect, down-to-earth introduction to living with Parkinson’s.

I would definitely recommend it, both for those diagnosed with the disease and their friends and family, to give a greater understanding of what to expect.

Having been diagnosed some three years ago (I, and the professionals, suspect that the Parkinsons began for me years before) I see the impact of the disease so much more clearly. Much of my time reading this book was accompanied by the phrase ‘Oh yeah’ & ‘Of course!’
It has been so helpful to read someone else’s explanations of, often, the mundane aspects of life and how PD turns them into challenges and even battles. And, more importantly, how to be creative in facing those battles and, at the same time, find a way to accept and, indeed celebrate the diminishing returns from what you can do each day.
A must read for those facing PD as a person with Parkinsons or those who care about/for them, including any professionals!

My partner has Parkinson’s and I am always interested to read about other people’s experience with the disease as it can vary so much from person to person. I found this very easy to read and got a lot from it.
