I was looking for some simple book to explain some basics of spanish. Couldn’t find any. And this one is definitely NOT that either.

But to get into that, I watched several youtube videos, some simple courses, about the very basic grammar rules, conjugation and THEN I bought this book.

I think now I appreciate it as much as I can.

Every single chapter is useful, full of grammar, vocabulary and interesting facts. What I really like is that basically the whole book is in a form of dialogues. So it gives more aspects than just some school book.

I’d definitely recommend to someone, who, just like me, has recently started to learn spanish and might have got at least some idea about how the language works. Of course that is just in my opinion, because throughout the book I ran into things that would have made me a bit confused if I hadn’t known them before.

But also, I am not english. So unlike english people most of the words don’t ring a bell for me so I needed some pre-lesson.

I have been trying to learn Spanish for about 6 months now and in several different ways. I went on a ‘beginners’ course at college initially but found that didn’t really suit me at all and it just ended up frustrating me. I have a ‘beginners’ app on my computer which is very helpful in covering the basic subjects. Then I paid for a course which consisted of 90 10-minute videos and an accompanying workbook which covered every video in detail and tested you in reading and writing basic Spanish sentences. It wasn’t meant to be expansive and worked primarily off of about 130 Spanish words / verbs. That suited me fine as I wasn’t looking to read a Spanish newspaper or have a 20-minute conversation with an Amigo. I really enjoyed the course and learnt a lot. That style of learning really worked for me.
Having finished that and still calling myself a beginner I decided to read this book hoping to take my learning up a notch.
The book has all the usual learning basics: The alphabet, numbers, colours, days of the week, month etc, etc. It works hard on the conjugation of many of the common verbs.
However, whilst the book tries to cover everything you’d come across in Spain, the main thrust of the book is to inundate you with page after page (300 of them!) of Spanish sentences which covers these scenarios. The problem I had was that I simply didn’t know a lot of the words in the sentences …and yes, the answers were below, but you can’t learn hundreds of different words by scanning them once or twice. Frankly, it became tiresome and quite hard work to finish the book.
I also felt more explanation of how the Spanish construct their sentences would have been beneficial as it’s certainly not easy to fathom at times why they put words where they do!
I did not really enjoy this experience, but hay, that’s possibly me saying ‘textbook learning’ is not for me, so I’m going back videos and workbooks.

This book is great for learning the foundation of a language and the general rules but it isn’t a perfect book for learning everything. If you’re planning a short trip away or just want to get by speaking some Spanish then its perfect.

I specifically looked for the Spanish for DUMMIES book as I had bought a previous book from this series and found it extremely straightforward to read and very accessible. The book is clearly written, clearly states what you’ll learn and the contents page is clearly set out so you’re able to access what you want quickly.

My son is learning Spanish at school and I wanted to be able to support him, even if it’s just him correcting me. I knew this would be the book for me, not complicated, pronunciation is given in brackets which for me, makes the learning even easier and I don’t find the material overwhelming. I haven’t played the accompanying CD yet so unable to comment on that.

I would certainly recommend this book definitely for the beginner or anyone looking for quick reference material. Happy learning.
