Exhilarating and Bewitching YA Fantasy
I really enjoyed this début novel, because I just found it so enjoyable, playful and fun, as well as quite terrifying.
I loved the author’s descriptions of the awkwardness of the heroine, April, and the daily embarrassments of school life which can follow distinct hierarchies of an ‘in’ and ‘out’ crowd. Twisted Lakes School is very much in that ilk as April finds herself the victim of bullies who cut her hair off in the toilet. But her luck seems to be about to change when her love interest, Alex, shows an interest in her. And when her best friend dumps her, an attractive new girl, May, strikes up a friendship with her, and gives her a tonic to regrow her shorn hair.
But after she buys a strange but beautiful antique, called the “Spirit Catcher”, her world starts to unravel, as the outwardly sweet May seems to exert a sinister power over April, her classmates and brother, with potentially dangerous consequences.
It is a really intriguing book. A pacy page-turner that readers of all ages can enjoy.
