Move better, prevent injuries and understand the body in action.

Whether you are a coach, a rehabilitation professional or an athlete, understanding movement and its relationship to performance and health equips you with powerful, practical knowledge.

Now in its second edition, Stability, Sport and Performance Movement provides the tools for understanding and working with movement in simple but effective ways, with even more user-friendly tips to uncover potential physical barriers and unlock the potential for fluent, effortless movement.

In this new edition, Joanne Elphinston introduces functional force management (FFM) as a concept for understanding the different control strategies needed between sports, how it influences training choice, and its relationship to injury prevention as well as performance.

The book includes an updated Foundations and Fundamentals section with an entirely new chapter on FFM, as well as in-depth exploration of these principles in each key body zone.

Packed with full-colour images to illustrate the techniques and concepts involved, Stability, Sport and Performance Movement provides a comprehensive chapter on analysing movement, followed by a progressive integrated programme of stability, mobility, coordination and balance to create the foundation for effective movement, from early activation through to higher level neuromuscular activities. Sample programmes and clinical examples help the reader to understand the application of this approach across a variety of sports.

The techniques and philosophy within the book have been applied with international-level athletes in disciplines as diverse as swimming, badminton, gymnastics, karate, cycling, weight lifting, basketball, athletics, snow sports, football, golf, equestrian sports and tennis. However, they have been applied equally effectively by people of all ages and ability levels as they come to understand their bodies and learn to work with them systematically from sound foundations.

there is a lot of information in this great book presented in a very clear and easily understood way, simple language and seemingly simple exercises and assesment methods .
I have 2 copies one at work and one at home and both are now very dog eared through use.
The book is a perfect accompaniment to Joanne’s course or alas a stand alone text book , all physios should have a copy.

Quite simply amazing! One of the best books on the subject of movement. If you want to move ‘beautifully’ you have to have the base level foundations is place. This book helps you identify and improve those…

If you you’re a health or fitness professional and enjoy this book I can’t recommend the JEMS seminars enough. If you think the author can write well, just wait until you hear her speak about and teach this subject. Game changer!!!

The book is a great foundation that supports the course. I did not undestand it at first as I thought it was too simple!

After 12 months of trialling a few bits, I went on the course and have found the book to be one of the best reference points for learning i’ve ever come accross.

It has underlying theory, real life examples, clear sections with example programmes. It’s a must have in your library and please don’t miss out on the immediate benefit like I did.

I’ve recently started out on the JEMS course, and am finding the techniques to be of immense value. This book is excellent; very clear to read, plenty of photo’s to help you focus on good and poor technique when you are still learning, and great exercises that clients enjoy, and see results from. I would recommend it to anyone – I’m a run-of-the-mill physio, not in elite sport, and the techniques are applicable to EVERY client I see – an invaluable resource.

I have had this book a number of years and I’m constantly referring back to it. I recommend it to friends that are injured and physio colleagues. The information is written in a way that works for the athlete and professional. A huge range of assessment and progressive exercise ideas. The text also reinforces content from the JEMS course I recently attended. In my view; highly recommended!!

I really liked the previous edition of this book and the 2nd edition is an unexpected improvement on that.
I use the book on a daily basis in my Sports Therapy work, its definitely my ‘go to’ reference manual.
Being hyper critical I would say that I preferred the slightly smaller more compact style of the 1st edition, and some of the print quality in the new book is poor – the content however is 1st class

A really excellent book either to support the courses that Joanne runs or as a stand alone text to help take a complete look and understand movement patterns of your own body or of the people you may work with. Very practical exercises are demonstrated with photos to help guide towards solutions. An essential text for anybody that works with human bodies in a movement capacity, whether that be children, elderly, elite sports or anything in between.
