King of jungles so you better take a bow.
King of concrete so you better say it loud!

Shaun (aka MC Growls) is ready to drop his best bars and smash the competition at Raptology. That way, he’s convinced Tanisha, his crush, will finally give him a chance.

But when a livestream practice goes epically wrong, Growls’s dirty laundry is literally exposed. He’s finally achieved his dreams of going viral – not in the good way.

Now Tanisha won’t look at him, he’s the joke of the school and there’s no way he can show his face at the competition. Will he ever catch a break?

Then a new girl on the block appears who might be just the friend Growls needs. Especially when she points out that Raptology could be the answer to his problems after all. . .

STEP UP TO THE MIC! It’s MC Growls and he’s ready for this. He’s steady for this. It’s comeback season and they call him comeback king for a reason.

The English in this book is horrendous. Incorrect spellings and grammar. The fact that this book is published is beyond me. Given the target audience are teens how does this help them improve their reading? If I wanted to dumb myself I would pick up this book, it’s worse than tiktok.

We bought a copy a few days ago, my son has already finished the book. I had a lot of me time, while he giggled in his room. Money well spent.
He kept quoting the jokes, so I decided to give it a read too. Quoting this book has become a private joke with me and my son. I love it!

    Really slow starter.

Nearly put it down as I couldn’t get into it, which put me in a reading slump. But I wanted to finish it so carried on.

    The ending was really good.

I think it was just the writing style that put me off but it’s because it’s wrote like the character talks. Which isn’t the best as he thinks he’s all that and some big rapper that he doesn’t talk properly ????.

I enjoyed the story overall though that’s why I put it at 4 stars instead of 3.

This was given to me as an earc from Netgalley.

“Steady For This” is an enjoyable novel that is aimed at younger audiences considering its use of slang and youthful language. The author has a great way of engaging with the reader whilst also including issues that are dealt by teenagers within our society.
Shaun Thompson (who is also known as MC Growls) decides to take part in a Raptology competition with hopes of catching the attention of a certain individual, a girl named Tanisha to be precise. He planned to impress the gorgeous girl by winning the competition, in addition to giving the prize money to his mother. However it all goes horribly wrong when an embarrassing incident gets leaked online, causing the pitiful boy to become the school’s laughing stock. Although, things start to get better when a new girl named Siobhan gets introduced to the story; Shaun no longer sees impressing Tanisha as his main goal.
This was definitely a fun read with a great, calculated plot! I would highly recommend this book to young readers.

I loved this book! I think anyone of any age, male or female, would love it too. It’s funny, sweet and clever and you’ll learn lots of Southeast London lingo 🙂

I am certainly not the target audience for this book as a 35 year old mother of 2 under 5. However I did mostly enjoyed this book. The characters grew on me as the plot developed. It is sad, funny, reflective and relevant to the current world. It certainly has a different style of writing and slangs that I don’t understand (perhaps culturally different and too old to learn?), however I read through the entire book in the rhythm of rap, or like long long rhyme.

I was really unsure of the book due to not understanding the slangs and style of writing thus making it a bumpy read where I need to pause and think about what I’m reading rather than just absorbing the words like a sponge. However the more I read, the easier it became and I’m left to enjoy the child-like joy and endearment amongst the characters. I’m glad I read through the book and did not give up, will recommend this to teens!
