This series just goes from strength to strength. A very well constructed, exciting story sees Cass picking up on a decades old case of murder, cut & dried with the perpetrator set to die in prison but, of course, nothing is that clear cut.
With Cass persuaded to look into the case, James takes us on a roller-coaster of a ride with a real rogues gallery of great characters, up to its final, dramatic conclusion. My only real criticism is that, of all the possible conclusions, the end ‘reveal’ is probably the only one I didn’t see coming: it seemed to come completely out of the blue and I don’t recall any clues pointing in that direction. Maybe I missed something but it seemed an entirely unexpected conclusion. It didn’t make the ending any less exciting or dramatic but did leave me afterwards feeling a little as though I’d been played.
I was given an advance copy to review and it’s always a pleasure to read a Robin James book. Despite my view of the ending, it’s a hugely enjoyable story that inspires tension, fear, tears, laughter & suspense and has you rooting for Cass all the way. It’s a pity that Eric seems largely sidelined in this story. I really want to see more of him & Cass. Maybe in the next one? Keep them coming

The Cass Leary saga has everything a legal thriller series needs plus a golden thread of evolving family and community issues too. It’s great.

By far the best so far. Ok, not a courtroom drama but the bits and pieces leading to the truth were really good, with the twist to solidify it brilliantly thought out.
Still a couple of issues. Two books back Vangie had put in an offer on a house on the lake. In this book she was renting. Cass drives somewhere and Eric takes her home. What? Leaves her car three hours away? Little things but annoying.
