There is no depth to this book, it’s mediocre at best. Struggled to read past the first chapter due to so many spelling errors and typos, words running together and poor sentences. Skim read the rest. No idea how this got so many good reviews. It’s like a long blog post.

“Stop overthinking” by Nick Trenton provides an overview of evidence-based methods to combat overthinking and anxiety. Trenton’s expertise shines through as he provides actionable strategies to help readers break free from cycles of overthinking and regain control of their thoughts.

The book is well-structured, with each chapter focusing on a specific aspect of overthinking. Trenton addresses common triggers and patterns of overthinking and provides practical techniques and exercises to counteract them. These techniques include mindfulness practices, cognitive restructuring, and self-reflection exercises, among others. By providing a variety of tools, readers are empowered to find the strategies that work best for them personally.

The focus on actionable strategies means that there is relatively little space dedicated to underlying psychological theories or explanations of potential mechanisms. The case examples are also sparse and largely abstract. While some may see this as a drawback, I think the clarity of purpose adds to the book’s appeal. It’s geared towards readers who want to look up strategies rather than delve into the background.

Overall, “Stop Overthinking” is an excellent resource for anyone struggling with overthinking and seeking practical strategies to regain mental clarity and peace. Whether you tend to overthink yourself or know someone who does, this book is highly recommended for its actionable advice.

I have mixed views about this book. Starting with the
PROS – It has some solid tips for those who worry and overthink… it is almost a collection of practical techniques that I have heard over and over again from many different sources. As I am not new to the area of personal development/ self-help there wasn’t anything new here, but always helpful to have a reminder. Many of the techniques are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness based, so if you are already familiar with these, might not be for you.
CONS – I got the audio book and struggled with the voice on the audio… it felt abit like ‘mansplaning’…i.e. just do this, “why worry, when you don’t have to and you waste energy” type thing… this comes across as condescending and I felt in this way the book lacked heart.
If you suffer from mental health issues such as mood disorders including bi-polar, borderline or hormone related mood disorders then you need to be careful to be compassionate with yourself while reading as the writer/ narrator is a bit flippant about the realities of being ‘rational’ when you are in the throes of an episode.
