‘Ruthlessly efficient, entertainment. Pedigree fun’ – The Times
Discover the darkness that lurks around every corner in the latest instalment of the award-winning Grace series, now a major ITV series.
A ruthless crime. A race against time.
In the dead of night, a farmer hears a suspicious noise. It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: a break-in. When he confronts the intruders, he has no idea that just minutes later he will be left lying in a pool of blood. But the chilling truth lies not in the act itself, but what the perpetrators were willing to kill for.
At the scene of the crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace senses something amiss. This is no mere botched robbery; it’s the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime epidemic. Ruthless gangs, operating with military precision, have discovered a new black market flourishing in the shadows – an unthinkable source of wealth even more profitable than drugs.
Grace’s investigation into this deadly trade pits him against some of the most ruthless people he has ever encountered; people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder.
The clock is ticking, and the stakes have never been higher. Out of his element, and out of time, can Roy Grace put a stop to these criminal masterminds before more innocent lives are lost?
‘Peter James is one of the best British crime writers, and therefore one of the best in the world.’ – LEE CHILD, author of The Jack Reacher series

I think it’s safe to say that Roy Grace (aka Peter james) has cracked it again! The story is smack up to date, with characters and situations that are so totally correct and believable. Police officers are treated with respect deserving of the job they do (forget the bad apples currently iu the headlines) these guys and gals work hard!
The villains are absolute scum, hope you never meet them !!!!!!. Weaving a second story into the narrative is always dicey, James smashes it. Worth reading just for itself
The attention to detail is incredible, obviously so much research into each character, situation, use of many different techniques from digital forensics, gait recognition to using drones.
Many author’s (very well known) seem intent on getting as many books as possible into print thus sacrificing good, believable writing for poor sloppy rubbish.
It may have been a long time coming, but well worth the wait.
The book due in the spring looks as good ????????????

The plotline is so very relevant to today’s crime wave. One of my favourite things about Peter James’s books in general is the way the chapters are short and punchy enough to hold my interest even if I’m tired. Each chapter brings another string to the whole story until he very cleverly and gently pulls the threads together to bring the story to a close…..be it happy or not. Roll on spring 2024 for the next one.

I so enjoy Peter James’ writing, especially the Roy Grace series. He does so well to capture the reader, I finish the book within 2 days, once I start, I’m hooked. However, this one seemed to have a abrupt ending and I’m hoping, the next one answers a major story line. Especially as it was so emotional. I don’t want to give any specific details as I don’t want to spoil it for other people who haven’t read this one yet . That aside, I will always recommend Peter James to anyone looking for a good book to read.

I ordered this before it was available as he’s my fave writer. The book arrived the day it was scheduled too and was brilliant. Very relevant to what has been happening during Covid and was a really good read – Have now passed to my mum to read – Recommended!

It makes one think of puppy farming, illegal imports of dogs and the possibility of rabies in the country. Peter James at his best!

An engaging plot and a good line up of characters. Roy Grace doesn’t disappoint
