I got this writing activity book for my seven year old and she found it helpful in prompting a story etc. It also helped in writing sentences too. It’s as easy to understand and each page had a clear set up which helped to not confuse her when writing. I do think the content is better for 6 plus. However you might find some five year olds who are more confident and are at an above age level who will find most of these exercises fine to complete.

Overall I liked how it made things clear and fairly easy to understand. It definitely helped to let my daughter be creative with her sentences. A good activity book!

This is an excellent book to help children develop their storytelling skills. It’s aimed at 5-7 year-olds, but I think children at the lower end of this range would definitely need a lot of parental Support.

The 30-page workbook is designed to be worked through section by section so that skills can be learnt, reinforced and then built upon. There’s a lot of information, examples and instructions, as well as exercises to practice acquired knowledge.

Topics covered include: an introduction to understanding stories, sentence construction, and how to structure a story, as well as guidance on developing characters, settings and story ideas. It ends with sections on editing and proofreading.

As I said, a lot of this sounds very advanced for 5 and 6 year-olds, especially when it comes to the written exercises. My just-turned-6 grandson has a vivid imagination and is used to making up stories, so the concepts of beginning, middle and end, were easy for him to grasp. However, consigning his thoughts In writing to the page was a real challenge, and we couldn’t help noticing that the space available was very tight for his large, childish handwriting.

That said, I do believe there is lots here to benefit his storytelling over the next couple of years, and we definitely appreciated the helpful guidance notes for parents.

Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.

with lots of hints and tips. Ie saying the sentence out loud to see if it sounds right. It relies on children’s prior knowledge of certain well known story’s ie Cinderella Goldilocks Humpty Dumpty 30 pages long.

Aimed at 5-7 years, this is for children in Year 1 and Year 2.

On the very first page, I like how there is a star chart that you can colour in as pages are completed. It means the child can get ownership of their work and visually see their progress through the workbook.

The guide at the start of the book is useful, especially as it advises the book should be completed in chronological order. The book builds on from sentence level to characters, story structures and even editing. Answers are included at the back so there are still closed exercises in this workbook.

On each page is a yellow box that provides learning guidance for parents. It is really useful. The pages are bright and colourful, with a good balance between illustrations and questions. However, if a younger child is completing this workbook, parents will need to sit with them and read the instructions and questions. Also, for younger children, there is not enough space for their inevitably large handwriting. The book would have benefitted from being doubly spread out, even though it would mean activities going beyond a double spread, because children will struggle with the space provided.

This is a lovely book but I think children of 6 years and above would benefit the most, particularly with the later activities. I like how the earlier tasks are based on nursery rhymes to help prompt imaginative ideas, but I do think children as young as 5 will struggle to access it.

As a parent of an 8 year old who hates writing, I like the concept behind this book and am still hoping it may yet prove helpful. My son’s initial reactions have not been positive though: despite the colourful page borders and occasional clipart cartoons scattered throughout, he immediately judged this to be “work” and not something it was fair of me to expect him to do in the summer holidays.

The book provides some good instruction and exercises on how to write stories, but I shall have to wait till my son is in a more receptive mood before it will be worth getting him to do it; I predict it will still be a battle.

Some of this is the fault of my son, but this book doesn’t help with its dry introductions on each double spread which seem to be written more for adults than a young child – e.g. “A story must be thought about carefully to make it interesting for the reader”. I can’t anyone but the most motivated of children will work through this book unaided; it’s going to need an adult to guide and encourage.

I love any type of home learning book that supports the national curriculum and enables me to support my little one at home in his learning journey. This one is aimed at 5-7year olds and though I think there is some early work that could be completed at the lower end, this certainly will need some support until much older as the activities progress.

Aimed to be complete in conjunction with parental support, this guide takes you through step by step and builds on knowledge and skills to complete a story from sentence construction, to character development to editing and proof reading. Each topic covered is clear with instructions/examples then questions to support learning and understanding as well as some parental tips for helping build confidence in the topic explored.

I like that this home learning support is relevant and supportive to both child and parent alike and would certainly recommend the series from what I have seen so far.
