Street Art: discover street art in 140 hotspots in 42 cities worldwide (Lonely Planet)

£13.10£14.20 (-8%)

An insider’s guide to discovering the world’s best urban art. From amazing wall murals to Banksy’s stencils and Invader’s mosaics, we showcase 140 creative hotspots across 42 cities and tell you how to find them, as well as introduce pioneering artists and interview those who shaped the movement.

Street art is now present in almost every city, town and village in the world, from Aachen to Zwolle. Its true audience is measured in the billions. And given that the first record of homo sapiens painting on walls is thought to date back around 40,000 years, it’s surprising that street art has taken so long to flourish.

Today, the proliferation of legal walls and organised festivals around the world makes it possible to encounter thought-provoking, transformative art in the most unexpected of places.

This visual guide to the world of street art takes in the scene in over 40 cities and includes interviews with some of the most prolific and well-known street artists, including Blek le Rat, FAILE and Faith47. And with hundreds of locations plotted and a special focus on 15 of the world’s most incredible street art festivals, this guide will help you discover artworks hidden in plain sight around the world.

I love to travel and absorb the culture of the destination. I love art and enjoy the destination it brings you to.
This book makes a link, for me, between travel and art. The journey. How it challenges and shapes us as an individual?
There are many places I’ve been around the world, featured in this book, where I’ve missed the opportunity to feast my eyes on the hidden wonders.
The art work in this book inspires me to revisit with fresh eyes and motivation to witness these amazing works in the flesh.

This is a beautiful book full of beautiful images. I’ll be the first to admit I know nothing about street art, but I am interested and this book was a great introduction. It is not a book you can simply flick through as each image absorbs your attention, even on a third or fourth viewing. Descriptions of where to find them and interviews with street artists mean its more than just a pretty picture book. It has opened my eyes to street art and I look forward to seeing some of them, and others, out in the big wide world for real.

Living in one of the cities covered in the ‘Festivals’ section of this book has got me pretty interested in street art and the artists involved in the scene, I bought this book to get a bit more of a feel of what was going on globally and to find out a bit more about a movement that is becoming such a prominent backdrop to day-to-day life. I’ve got a son who immediately recognised some of the work in the book from our city, I’m looking forward to showing him sections of the book before we travel and then going to explore them in real life.

The book feels like it pulls the current global street art scene from something we see but may not necessarily fully acknowledge, into something more relatable and accessible, and I found the interviews with artists scattered through the book really interesting. Nice to have a background on the cities covered, it gives a good general overview of the place and reasons for some of the art created, but also pinpoints specific locations to visit to go and see the work for yourself, and hopefully get you strolling around the areas where you’ll discover more art.

Part visually stimulating book that’s perfect to sit down and look through, part travel guide that will influence places to visit when I’m in the cities covered, this book is a good mash up of giving a knowledgable insight into the global street art scene and artists but also staying true to trusted Lonely Planet travel guide advice.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid art buff or if you just have a light interest in art, you will love this book. It’s packed full of a staggering variety of beautiful street art from all over the world. It will transport you to the streets from city to city so that you can enjoy some of the very best talent out there from the comfort of your own home. Especially given the price, you’d be properly bonkers not to buy it.

Fantastic look at the world of Street Art, this book gave a great outlook on the subject. We see it all over the world but don’t always understand or appreciate the effort, time & that’s gone into the Artist’s work. Also a superb Travel guide, for people who love graffiti- street art, to look at the area’s concerned, visit them, take shots, have a coffee & take in the background.

When I travel, putting foot to pavement and letting the wind blow me is one of my favourite things to do. I am always amazed at what one can discover in a city before following a planned itinerary. Street Art has always fascinated me, it changes so dramatically in theme and style from location to location, giving me political and cultural insights into the places I visit almost by osmosis. This brilliantly compiled book by Ed Bartlett has added fact and understanding to what was already an accidental hobby of mine. Thorough, and yet as Ed states in the introduction, merely the tip of the iceberg, in flicking through the pages of this book you get the distinct feeling that by following the suggestions of each city you will also stumble upon work that doesn’t feature in the book, and most excitingly stumble across new works that don’t even exist yet. This book is about as close to a modern day map of treasure that I have yet to have found. With a guide to street art festivals across the world and interviews with a handful of the artists themselves I am delighted this book exists and have already used it to plot my next set of travels. It is a wonderful accompaniment to Lonely Planets oeuvre, and a brilliant travel companion in its own right.
