I love these insights based on research and I like the book a lot.
Strengths Finder 2.0 is a book that unpacks firstly the philosophy behind Strengths Based approaches to work and life, but then helps you to identify and explain your own strengths. In this way, the hope is that you can live and work from your strengths and understand how to better develop them.
You don’t read the book and pick what you think your strengths are. Each book gives you a one time code to take the Strengths Finder assessment. A set of questions that you answer on line and the assessment tool will then identify your top five strengths.
You can then use the remainder of the book to study the strength and how you might develop each one.
The book is fairly well written, although I found the explanations lacking at times and sometimes I found the suggestions to be half baked. Though there is a LOT to work on all the same.
I think that the reader needs to realise that the book is just the doorway into a much larger world. The assessment tool and the reports it generates is where the deeper insights will come. Once you have registered and answered the questions you are e-mailed report that is tailored to you.
There is also a network of trainers who can come and work with teams to help them identify their strengths and find new ways to work together based upon the individual strengths of team members. I think that Strengths Finder 2.0 will be a revelation for many people and I have benefited from it personally. It has really helped me in my personal development and helped me to understanding what makes me tick. Not only that, but that I can celebrate my strengths and not apologise for them – rather, it is important to find places to express them fully.
I also believe that the encouragement to work to your strengths rather than try and fix your weaknesses is a game changer!
Strengths Finder 2.0 is an important book that could change the world.

This product consists of a book with some background information and descriptions of all the various strengths, as well as a unique link to a website where you take a ‘test’ of about 100 paired statements. You then get a personalised report of the results and how you might look to use them. The test involves strongly agreeing or disagreeing with two statements on each end of a scale where you rate whether you lean more towards one statement than the other. I found it very difficult to answer some of the questions as occasionally I agreed completely (or disagreed completely) with both statements though had to ‘sit on the fence’ in order to feel equally about each which I think must have affected the results.
Like all these things (Myers Briggs, Insights etc) there are always limitations due to the way you take the test, interpret the results and so on. The test tells you your top 5 strengths but it’s easy to interpret this wrongly by assuming that you don’t have certain other strengths which some people could find misleading. What’s also missing is some guidance on what actually to do with the results particularly if you want to use it for working in teams or in collaboration with others in the work place. I spent some considerable time trying to work out what conclusions I could draw from this and designing a follow up session to try and make something out of my team’s combined results, but still am not convinced I’ve really achieved that. All that said, the test is quite enjoyable (even if I didn’t understand some of the ‘Americanisms’ used in some of the wording) and I suppose is a good tool for companies to reassure staff that they actually are interested in developing them. Very importantly, you must buy the book new otherwise you will not get your unique code to get onto the website and take the test.

If you have no idea what your strengths are you may find this useful. But I found it told me what I already know. You complete a timed questionnaire online to get your results. Access is via a code. So you need a new copy of the book, or the code is likely to have been used. I did get a Kindle version at first but there was no code and so Amazon gave a refund and I got the physical book. I then had about 5 pages of report telling me my strengths but the website lists all these additional reports you can get for a price. Felt it was rather a con for the price. There are free tests online that tell you just as much. The book itself goes into a little more detail on all the areas that can come up.

I was first introduced to the Strengthsfinder by a former company – as a result of that, I realised why I was unhappy in the role, I wasn’t using any of my strengths…. I was in the wrong job! I’ve subsequently used the Strengthsfinder with other teams I have managed, and have found it incredibly helpful to understand styles and strengths, especially ones that perhaps the current job doesn’t allow them to demonstrate. You only need to read the first 30 pages before you use the online tool – the refest of the book provides more context after the online tool is completed. Its the one “profiling” tool that I’ve found really connects the dots for me, and identified and categorised strengths and interests in a simple way. The online tool is easy to use, and can be re-done years later when perhaps you are at a different stage of career. The one feature missing from this book that I had in a previous version, is how to manage people with the strengths identified – I believe this might be available in another volume by this author. Highly recommended.

The test is very accurate however you only have access to your five top strengths and have to pay more if you want to view the rest. Five is enough for me however! I get regular emails discussing key aspects of the strengths which are good. The book of course covers all the strengths in detail.
A good buy.
