Subway Art: (reduced format edition) (Street Graphics / Street Art)

In 1984, photographers Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant captured the imagination of a generation with Subway Art, a groundbreaking book documenting the work of graffiti writers who illegally painted subway cars in New York City. The 2009 edition of the book is now available in a new, slightly reduced format. Henry Chalfant’s images of the trains retain their impact, while Martha Cooper’s narrative pictures tell the story. In the introductions, the authors recall how they gained entry to the New York graffiti community in the 1970s and 1980s and describe the techniques that they used to photograph it. Afterwords report how the lives of the original subway artists have unfolded, and chronicle the end of the subway graffiti scene in the late 1980s and its unexpected rebirth as a global art movement. This is an essential book for all fans of graffiti, stunning photography and 1980s-cool.

I had the original and iconic ‘Subway Art ‘ book in the 80’s, which took weeks to save for before being stolen. This is so much bigger, enormous actually with beautiful pictures that fold out. It has more information and an update to some of the orginal artists. Think of it as a Directors cut!!! Just be careful when ordering; that it is big, so won’t be holiday or commuter reading. It’s a beautiful book, a work of Art in itself and anyone who has an appreciation of this genre of art will be captivated. For the price its great value, you will not be disappointed although your bookshelf may not feel the same way…

Subway Art is the king of documenting the history of the birth of subway art in America. Basically with out those that photographed this art form we would have no account in history of the birth of street art.

After 25 years, Thames & Hudson release the ‘director’s cut’ version, if you will, of the graffiti ‘bible’.
First of all I must comment on the size of this book. It’s big. It’s very big. You know those over-size cards you see at Clinton’s Cards and think “who buys those?”, well this book is as big as that.
And just as well because it gives you the chance to see a lot of the original pictures in a massive, close-up fashion. It really does them justice. And remember the fold-outs in the original version? Forgetaboutit. They’re still here but this time they’re almost life-size!

Also included is an update by Henry and Martha with the tales of how they put the original book together as well as a look into what the old school writers did next.

In conclusion then, this book is really an add-on and you do need to have the original version first as the 25th Anniversary Edition doesn’t include all the text and pictures from the original.
Also I wish the UK version had the same front cover as the US edition with the famous photo of Dondi between two subway cars. Instead we get a rather inferior, garish cover.
