Hendra and Linnet have created a super series which really appeals to the 3-7 age group. We always look forward to a new release and, although there have been a couple of odd blips over the years, most of the Supertato books are worthy of 5 stars. This 8th edition to the series has definitely been another hit in our house, following the slight disappointment of their previous offering ‘Bubbly Trubbly’.
The theme, ‘fright night’, gives a very Halloweeny feel, so it’s perfect for this time of year. Young children of a sensitive disposition may benefit from a gentle pre-warning that nothing scary is really going to happen, and it’s just the Veggies getting themselves worried over nothing, but most should be fine with the (incredibly) mild hint of threat in the build up.
The book is packed full of the usual punchlines and puns us grown-ups have come to expect. Sleepy-tato and Zom-peas both raised a smile in our house!
The Evil Pea does very much take a back seat in this one. He appears, but there are no evil tricks and he seems just as much in need of ‘rescuing’ as the other veggies. I don’t think that necessarily matters though. If anything, I think it’s nice to show that even the Evil Pea has things he is afraid of too. Even brave old Supertato gets twitchy at one point!
Most Supertato books end with a punchline of some sort but the authors mix it up in this one by deciding to give a nod towards their previous work to highlight the importance of bedtime stories, instead. We appreciated the ending a lot.
Just when you fear they might finally be running out of ideas for new Supertato adventures, they pull another rabbit out of the hat!

My Grandson loves this book and now his Dad has to read it to him every night. Great illustrations which he loves to look at and point to. Going to buy the other books in the series. Recommend. Have to add I gave the book 5 stars because it is worth it but the book was forced through our letterbox to the extent it was folded over about 2-3 inches to get it through. It’s a larger size book and should have been put in the greenhouse where I ask items to be left. Obviously too much for the driver to walk around to back of house to leave it safely and not damaged. This is not the fault of Amazon but of the delivery driver. I did contact Amazon where I was offered a refund or replacement but I said no as it was not their fault and also because my Grandson knew the book was coming and had been patiently waiting for it. He did not want to give me it back to return so we let him keep it. It is still readable but the bend is obvious even after being put under mattress!! If it had been a part of a birthday present it would have been useless The supervisor I spoke to at Amazon said it would be looked into and the company contacted. Hopefully the delivery company speaks to the guy and he will learn not to do this. But, great book.

Supertato is already a big favourite of my sons and he was really excited when this new story arrived. He absolutely loved listening to me read it at bedtime. He wanted it read to him several times as he enjoyed it so much. We have many of the supertato stories already at home and my son said it’s just as good as the others. He wanted me to give it 5/5 stars.
A great story to help with being scared of the dark and the importance of having a bedtime story.

Very good book and engages the children. Some may find it a little scary at first but as it gets further in, the story becomes alot less scary
