Do you ever think you’re the only one making any sense? Or tried to reason with your partner with disastrous results? Do long, rambling answers drive you crazy? Or does your colleague’s abrasive manner get your back up?

You are not alone. After a disastrous meeting with a highly successful entrepreneur, who was genuinely convinced he was ‘surrounded by idiots’, communication expert and bestselling author, Thomas Erikson dedicated himself to understanding how people function and why we often struggle to connect with certain types of people.

Originally published in Swedish in 2014 as Omgiven Av Idioter, Erikson’s Surrounded by Idiots is already an international phenomenon, selling over 1.5 million copies worldwide, of which over 750,000 copies have been sold in Sweden alone. It offers a simple, yet ground-breaking method for assessing the personalities of people we communicate with – in and out of the office – based on four personality types (Red, Blue, Green and Yellow), and provides insights into how we can adjust the way(s) we speak and share information.

Erikson will help you understand yourself better, hone communication and social skills, handle conflict with confidence, improve dynamics with your boss and team, and get the best out of the people you deal with and manage. He also shares simple tricks on body language, improving written communication and advice on when to back away or when to push on, and when to speak up or indeed shut up. Packed with ‘aha!’ and ‘oh no!’ moments, Surrounded by Idiots will help you understand and influence those around you, even people you currently think are beyond all comprehension.

And with a bit of luck you can also be confident that the idiot out there isn’t you!

I found this book to be very enlightening and helpful. It explains how different people have different personality types, and how to communicate with them effectively. The author uses the DISC model, which categorizes people into four colorus: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue. Each colour has its own strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and motivations. The book teaches you how to identify the colours of yourself and others, and how to adapt your style to suit their needs. The book is full of examples, tips, and exercises that make it easy to apply the concepts to your own life. I learned a lot about myself and the people around me. I realized why some people are easy to get along with, while others are more challenging. I also learned how to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts, and how to improve my relationships with different colours. The book is written in a clear and engaging way, with humour and anecdotes. The author is an expert on communication and behaviour, and he shares his insights and experiences in a relatable way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand themselves and others better, and to communicate more effectively in any situation. It is a great book for personal and professional development.

A good intro to the four personality types and mine was def accurately portrayed. I skipped over the anecdote personally, there’s many and I found them a bit reductive. Great book and certainly will help @ work with managing relationships

This book is so good. I could instantly pick up traits of myself as a blue and a bit of red but I also discussed this with my sisters who could also identify. As a result I’m learning how to relate with them better and be more understanding of the personality traits of others.

Really enjoyed this book – it’s bang on the money with its practical guide to human behaviour archetypes. It helps you understand what makes different personality types tick. Fantastic read – and useful for the workplace, for our family lives, for building any types of connections. Well worth a read.

It has taught me so much about how people behave and how their default personalities drive their thinking and decision-making. It has enabled better communication with my peers and colleagues as well as my family.

I’ve been a big advocate of this type of profiling, being a fan of the “Insights” personality test, which is effectively the same thing that the author describes here. That said, this book could probably have said what it needed to say in half the time… The irony being that this is exactly what somebody of my personality profile would think and say (red with yellow).

Overall a good read, and informative for those uninitiated with this type of learning.
