Surviving Pet Loss, is a self-help guide for those affected by pet bereavement. Grieving over a much loved pet can be a long and often lonely experience. Author Dawn Murray has nearly two decades of supporting pet carers pre, during and post the loss of their pets, both as a pet bereavement counsellor and a pet undertaker. She is one of the most experienced and successful pet bereavement counsellors in the UK, and for the first time she has shared her own moving experiences of pet bereavement.

All profits from the sale of Dawns book will go to animal welfare charities.

“Coping with the loss of a pet is an event that takes many people by surprise. Surprise at the level of grief they experience. Surprise that they can’t ‘just get over it’. Surprise that they may need to take time off work and surprise that other people just don’t seem to understand the depth of pain they are feeling. Dawn Murray has some wise words for anyone going through the trauma of pet loss and this is a book that will provide a lot of comfort for people at a time when they will most certainly need it.” – K9 Magazine – Ryan O’Meara & Accomplished Author

“As a Military Working Dog Handler, I have taken more than my fair share of loyal companions on their final journey. I have also done the same with pet animals. One thing I do know is that it never gets easier. I will often find one of my companions springing into my mind from nowhere. Sometimes happy memories, often sad. I have found Dawns’ book both insightful and taken some great tips to help both now and in the future. As one of the quotes states; ‘it’s your grief and yours alone’. Remember that in all walks of life.” – RAF Flight Lieutenant Michael ‘Will’ Barrow Author of Buster

”What a fantastic little book!!! The loss of a pet and ultimately a companion can be devastating and very traumatic. The book will help those who have suffered a loss understand the process of loss, bereavement and grieving. As Dawn states: ‘Loss, bereavement and grief are all part of our journey through life and although we have to face the journey alone, we can and do recover.’ This book will definitely help those who have lost a beloved pet understand the journey that they are going to go on, from loss to ultimately acceptance” – Dr Peter Du Toit

This little book was a great source of comfort, guidance and advice at a time of immense sadness, indeed, devastation, at the untimely death of our dog. Written with great insight and sensitivity by someone who has lived through it herself. Thoroughly recommended.

Having recently lost my beloved dog I have struggled with the physical pain of his absence in my life. I recognise myself in the pages of this book and have taken a great deal of comfort from the advice it provides. Accepting that what I am feeling is normal has made me stronger. I would urge others who like me are struggling with pet loss to read this book. It is very well written providing the reader with a greater understanding of the grieving process. The author sharing personal experiences brought the book to life for me. I cried at the poems but could not stop myself from laughing at the antics of Presley.

This little book is like a supporting, guiding light that I can turn to any time for help, during my grief after losing my 14 and a half year old dog, Gracie. I feel like I’ve been set adrift on my own in a boat, with no oars or sail, alone and frightened with no comforting companion by my side, and no clue what to do, or where I’ll end up. Losing my girl is a pain I’ve never felt before, and I turned to Dawn, and her book, to help give me some direction. I’m taking it one day at a time, and most days I cry and feel sadness, but am also celebrating Gracie’s life and cherishing our memories together, and this book reaffirms how important it is to do that, and keep our pets alive in our hearts, minds and lives. They deserve to be remembered every day, and we don’t have to “move on” or “let go” of them, they will always be with us forever. I talk to Gracie every day as usual, because I know she’s still with me. Her pictures are in every room in our home so I see her every day, and I keep her things out just as they were left, because they bring me comfort and sometimes a tear to my eye; other times a smile on my face. I also made a memory jar, for myself and everyone who knew Gracie, to write little memories about her in, so on days when I feel low, I can pick one out and read it and remember her fondly with joy. I also have a keepsake box of some of her things, and I was blessed to be able to say goodbye to her as she peacefully went to sleep in my arms, and then bring her home, and she’s resting in the garden she loved so much, where I can sit next to her and have our usual morning coffee together. Dawn’s book helps me see that all these things are normal and healthy and help in the grieving process. I also especially drew strength from Dawn’s own stories of her pet losses in the book, which allow you to empathise and understand that all of us dog / pet lovers, will eventually have to say goodbye, and suffer for the love we give these brilliant, beautiful, clever, loving, loyal and joyful little furry humans that become part of the family, and fulfil our lives forever. (written by Gracie’s Mummy, Kate Lawson)

This is a great easy to read little book, it covers so many aspects of losing a pet, so many thought provoking snippets and good solid advice.

I like the way it is split into mini chapters including how to help children of all the differing ages to cope with the loss of their pet as well as how different the experience can be when you live alone or are elderly etc.

The book is written simply and compassionately and I would recommend it for anyone who is likely to have to face this difficult event in our lives (or have friends and family who will be).

The stories of the authors own pets are enlightening and endearing and the selection of poems are beautiful.

    This book ‘is the bomb!’

This is a really easy to read book with helpful advice on how to deal with the physical and emotional side effects that can arise following the loss of a much loved pet. It explains each stage of the grieving process and offers helpful tips to help ease and address them. The core message being that grief is unique to each individual and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. The poems are beautiful and will provide much comfort during difficult times. The personal accounts also give an insight into the depth of love the author has for all animals. If you are struggling in your grief, following the loss of a pet, this book aims to help you understand those feelings and navigate you towards a place of acceptance.

It has taken me just over 2 months after the loss of my soul dog to be able to read this in full. I have dipped in and out and had the book in full view every day until now as a source of comfort and it will continue to be there for as long as I need it to be. Today when I re-read parts and went on to completely finish it, I cried still. Through Dawn’s experiences (selflessly shared to help others), I have found such comfort in knowing that my grief is not only normal, but a testimony of the love I was so gifted to have and to have received from my girl.
Thank you Dawn. You’re a special heart which the world is lucky to have.

Wow, what a read. This short but very informative book will guide you through a journey that some do not wish to travel but when we have a pet it is part of the ticket. Powerful thought provoking subjects do not get dusted over they are are detailed as they should be, in a way that comforts you as you realize the harsh reality.I would recommend this book to non pet owners also as some of life lessons are well dealt with in this book and i genuinely think we shall all learn a great deal from the content of it.
Pet loss is devastating whenever it comes calling, reading this shall help you deal accept and recover from it, none of us shall act the same, we shall all deal with it in our own way , but its nice to know we are not alone and this is that hand that will grip yours and ease the grief. Please help yourself by giving it a read.
