‘There’s water in the engine,’ he said. ‘The engine has stopped.’
This changed everything…

Surviving the Storms brings together incredible first-hand accounts of rescues carried out by the remarkable RNLI lifesavers.

In this collection of heart-wrenching and life-affirming missions, we hear blow-by-blow descriptions of some of the most dramatic rescues from the last twenty years. We experience these through the eyes of the lifesavers as they must make life-or-death decisions, face fierce conditions and tackle difficult and dangerous situations. But we also see the optimism, passion and courage that is crucial to a successful rescue, and experience the genuine joy felt by the volunteer crews and lifeguards in being a part of something so important.

Each remarkable story is one of bravery, jeopardy and an unrelenting commitment to battling the forces of nature and saving every life. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the RNLI – men, women, husbands, wives, fathers and mothers, all forming one big crew determined to protect perfect strangers. They are ordinary people doing the truly extraordinary.

This is a series of accounts of lifeboat crew in the UK (I believe they would be referred to as search and rescue elsewhere). Each chapter covers a particularly hazardous rescue from the point of view of one of the crew, many of them earning national recognition of their bravery and skills. If you have any interest in the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and its operations, this is definitely a book for you.

My one criticism would be the use of apparently random italics throughout, presumably in a misguided attempt to emphasise the importance of individual phrases. It’s annoying but didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.

This book was a great read. It was fascinating, happy times in it and the odd sad time too. Worth every penny I couldn’t put it down.

“Surviving the Storms “ gives an insight to the why and how RNLI crew and Lifeguards volunteer to carry out the life saving and dangerous work saving total strangers from situations not normally met in ordinary life. It shows what goes into the work required that is behind when the Lifeboat slides the launching ramp or when they put to sea in weather that we, Joe Public would head into shelter. It shows the dangers that the beach Lifeguards face when called to save people from the beach. There is also a casualty view what it is like to be in danger and the relief when the guys and girls in yellow arrive. A very good read.

This is book is an interesting compilation of stories from RNLI team members (and a rescuee) demonstrating the amazing work the RNLI does. I am sure they have more stories to make another book…

I listened to the audiobook then I bought the paperback for my father in law.

4.5 stars because one of the audiobook narrators sounds a bit robotic.

After the first couple of chapters I was wondering if this might just become one of those repetitive and ‘samey’ stereotypical reads as we are introduced to each new character and their story which earned their medal or special honour. But for me what lifts the book out of being just such an ordinary read is the personal background stories of each individual. Where they grew up, their hopes and aspirations, who and what inspired them to join the RNLI, how they came to love the sea and their human stories of joy, difficulty and unexpected heartbreak. Some might find this is a little bit cheesy but for me it adds a very human element to the testimonies of each rescue. Others might also find irritating and rather melodramatic the need for the publishers to capture any statement remotely eye catching in italics at every opportunity! Nonetheless this book is an easy read and the royalties go to a very good cause to support the courageous and exceptional work of the RNLI.
