System Collapse (The Murderbot Diaries Book 7)
£8.99
Everyone’s favorite lethal SecUnit is back in the next installment in Martha Wells’s New York Times bestselling Murderbot Diaries series.
Am I making it worse? I think I’m making it worse.
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly-colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there’s an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can’t have the planet, they’re sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize.
But there’s something wrong with Murderbot; it isn’t running within normal operational parameters. ART’s crew and the humans from Preservation are doing everything they can to protect the colonists, but with Barish-Estranza’s SecUnit-heavy persuasion teams, they’re going to have to hope Murderbot figures out what’s wrong with itself, and fast!
Yeah, this plan is… not going to work.

I’m surprised! There are lots of ways that Murderbot could go and things he could do but Martha Wells choose to make him more human and to continue on from book 5. She also reduces the action at first. Fascinating choices and it all adds up to another Murderbot classic that supports and adds to the rest of the diaries. Maybe not quite as awesome as book 5 (A- rather than A+ as previous reviewer said) but there is no predicting where Martha Wells will take us all next. Her universe is exceptionally detailed, believable and exciting.

This book is perfect. Everyone should read this series. This newest addition is different from the others in the series in ways that make it novel and surprising, but retains the features that made me love the series in the first place.

At £9 for a 240 page ebook its a very expensive read. It is really only what should have been part of the previous book. I was expecting a whole new Murderbot adventure. So as much as I loved the earlier books, I am doubtful about continuing the series. For £9 I expect a 450 to 500 page paperback. For a 240 page ebook I expect to pay £3. Its a matter of ecconomics, there are much better books out there than System Collapse, for a fraction of the cost. Martha has priced herself out of consideration and seems to have lost track of SecUnit’s uniqueness by regurgitating previous situations. Bit of a shame

The important thing to know here is that Wells is changing direction of the series. She is tying up some of the loose ends from Network Effect and building a launchpad for the next book. It is necessary work from a series point of view but means this is not her strongest standalone, an A- rather than an A+. There are moments that lag a little in the middle. But she makes up for all that with the last third which is full Murderbot chaotic fun.
I will also say that I feel like she wanted us to fall in love with Iris in this book. But for me Iris isn’t individualised enough. I felt her character needed a touch more work to become a Dr Mensah, Don Abena or Amena.

Murderbot remains one of the great characters
of contemporary science fiction. The latest volume does not disappoint. Highly recommended reading.

There really wasn’t anything innovative or new going on here. It’s nicely written and well paced, just not the usual sparkle.

Fun reading and the expected funny bits but not as good as others in the series particularly #5
Well worth it.and devoured it in one day

Loved this; everything you would expect Murderbot to get up. Just need it to be twenty times longer as I’ve burned through this too quickly
